chevy 400 fc

Ok so i traded a toyota 20v for a t2 roller. I want to build into a drift car, cuz i dont want to risk destroying my fd. Anyhow my buddy has a chevy 400, that he is going to sell me for 400 bucks thats in perfect condition, that runs and sounds sick.

I am not to fimilure with v8s but from what i have read this engine has loads of torque. My concern is that i wont have a responsive enough engine for drifting. I figure i can always change the gearing but just wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

chevy 400 cu.in. where great engines , lot of instant torque, the T2 rear with 4.10 ratio should work fine.
all GM factory 400s had a carburator ,not exactly state of art, but lots of F/I systems available, Ebay and chevy sites should come up with a system(LS series are making price drops for the older small block stuff),
a modern race 4bbl would work also.

400s came in 2 configurations 2 bolt main caps, and 2 bbl carb.
other 4 bolt main caps, and 4bbl carb, mostly in big station wagon monsters.
anyway ethier can be fast but less money spent with 4 bolt blocx, and there must be thousands of cyl. heads available, all interchangable , combinations, and like i said that old stuff is gettin cheap money. since LS is slowly takin over!!

Ok cool yeah i have done some research on the engine, my only real concern is the stroke of the engine. The stroke seems too long for the car not bein able to rev it past 5k. I supose with the right gearing you can accomplish the same out come just at lower rpms with all that crazy *** torque. Do you have any suggestions as far as tranny, i would like a 5 speed or something like that.
