Jim- Just by accident, I read your thread on your woes with grant and the engine mount. I was considering putting a 383 stroker in my GTUs, and reading Grant's website, everything sounds like he has his act together. I was prepared to place an order with him this week. (spend that tax refund!). Guess I need to re-think whether this installation is as straight forward as he described it. I enjoy doing mods on cars, but do not want to get into a pissing contest with some fool who can't meet his obligations on ordered parts.

My advice is to read up on your particular swap on torquecentral.com and get an idea of what problems you may encounter. An SBC into a 1st or 2nd gen. is something that Grant has apparently mastered. Always getting all the parts to the customer on the first try is apparently not. :)

My newphew has a SBC in an '88 RX-7. Motor looks like it belongs in there. Runs 100 shot of NOS. It was converted at KDR with Grants parts. Nobody has beaten him on the street yet off the line. Torque is great for that first '60.

SBC transplant
Ken- Nice to see another old fart like me on the forum. Glad your nephew's swap worked out. I just recently started thinking about putting the small block in my 90 GTUs. I am having the third motor put in my FD, this time by Rotorsports Racing, so I have been driving my vette and also the GTUs. The NA 2nd gen just does not have any torque. I have not tinkered with any of the cars for a while, so the engine swap would be a fun project- I hope. Plus, unlike the rotary, I know my way around the internal workings of the chevy motor. I may still do this, but after reading Jim's post about his problems with grant, I certainly will need to check out my potential parts source.

Yes, it's interesting to see the viewpoint of the different age groups on the forum. When I began driving in 1962, the types of vehicles we are currently driving and discussing were not even thought of yet. I am pleased that there seems to be a re-birth of interest in cars by the current high school age group. For a while, it seemed like kids had no interest, and certainly no expertise, in anything automotive. This explains a lot of thirty-something adults who are incapable of even the most routine maintenance on their vehicles, rotary or otherwise.

I'm in the midst of a 383 SBC conversion in a first gen, with granny's kit, only problem I've came across is in drive shaft length, seems to be about an inch short. Although I'm not sure yet, only mocked thing up rough. Everything else fits great, except for having to raise the engine up about 1 1/2 inches to clear the oil pan which had to be bowed out on the bottom to clear the longer stroke crank. Placed my order on a Monday, had parts a week and a half later.

Even other first and second gen. owners haven't been so lucky. |

My 1st gen./302 swap was steering me to Granny's until I caught wind of the bad experiences that Jim and many others have had with Grant. Even though the kit I was interested in was pretty straighforward and relatively few had problems with them, I chose to stay clear of dealing directly with Granny's. I was lucky enough to find a fellow forum member who sold me a set of Granny's mounts for next to nothing. In return I drew up some semi-blueprint plans to make your own and posted them for free so that nobody would need to deal with Granny's if they didn't want to. Anybody who is adventurous enough to attempt an engine swap already has a multitude of obstacles to overcome. Shitty fab shops like Granny's just make everything a little sour, especialy when you've been held up as long as Jim has. Toughguy :) |
