Well, Car and driver just did a big brake kit test. Of coz it's not using FD as test car.
I didn't read the whole thing. But I notice that in some case the stock brake stop the car faster.

Well, let's see.

Brembo - a number of Japanese tuners use their parts to create their kits. Problem is, you need a part number to replace parts like the rotor and the caliper itself. Unless, of course, you are able to get a Brembo parts catalog and create a kit on your own.

AP Racing - owned by Brembo. Replacement is easy w/ part numbers, which many US tuners will provide parts #s upon request.

Alcon - same scenario as Brembo, but their presence in the US is virtually none. They are marketed as Baer here in the US, but nowhere near the same quality. Basically, Baer contracts Alcon to produce brakes for them according to Baer modified specs. So replacement parts for Alcon would be a pain.

Project Mu - While they are in the US (mackin), upgrading to their brakes requires replacement from them also.

Endless - Same scenario as Project Mu, but as you know, at least they have a US office. Replacement is still the same.

Wilwood - I've heard both good and bad things about them. I don't have experience from them, but I would imagine that replacement parts would be easy.

RX-7 (type RZ or otherwise) - replacement for these will ok for right now (so long as Mazda still produces the brakes). When they discontinue production...that would suck. Also, you are subject to Mazda prices.

So IMO, AP Racing and Wilwood would be the best in terms of replacement. Brembo would be good too as long as you get either the parts catalog and create a kit OR you can get a parts number off an existing kit. Project Mu and Endless basically require you to become a life long customer. (Not too say that their product isn't good...as I was considering the Endless/Zeal line of produccts). Mazda RX-7 replacement is currently nice, but can be pricey.

Hey ARD T2, maybe you could interest Alcon in taking a stronger US presence. I looked into this in the past, and unfortunately, they referred me to Baer. But maybe you can change their minds.

baer actually doesn't have anything for FD. at least I think so.

I know. It's just the Baer products are actually made by Alcon. That's all.

Mazda Motorsports lists them as "RZ" parts, so that is what I posted. I think that we are referring to the same parts despite the different terminology. I don't know which of "RS" or "RZ" is correct, or if perhaps they both are.

I thought M2 was rumored to be no longer in business. At least, that was the rumor that was popping up on this forum about 1 or 2 months ago.

Are they still in business?

Good question. I saw those posts, too, but I don't know how it turned out. I have seen no indications (web site changes, M2 parts dropped from RX-7 Store product listings, etc.) besides the rumor posts about them stopping their operation.

Does anyone know the real story, or perhaps if there was no real story? It could have just been a rumor.

BTW Max,

what size wheels do you run? I asked the FD guys what size wheels they run and what they would prefer to run. I know you're pretty involved w/ racing your FD, so I figured you may provide valuable feedback.

Max runs 10 x 18, 50.8-mm offset CCW wheels with 285/30-18 BFG G-Force R1As all around for the track. For public roads he uses 8.5 fr and 9.5 rr x 17, Volk SE37Ks, 40-mm offset for both sizes. Road tires are 245/40-17 fr and 265/40-17 rr. Tire brand is Bridgestone Potenza S-03.

Max, if you ever decide to sell those black SE37Ks (REAL CHEAP), let me know...

Damn SleepR1, are you stalking me? (just kidding) He is right; that is my setup.

I have been running Pagid RS4-2-1 pads in front so far, but I just got some Ferodo DS2500 street pads (F&R) and DS3000 (F&R) for the track. I like the Pagid pads just fine, but I decided to run the same pads front & rear to avoid weird behavior as the pads warm up. I was looking for Pagids for the rear calipers, but they don't make any.

I haven't been to the track at all this year. I've been building up a track car and I don't make it to the track anymore. Blah... I need to get back at it.

Tubes? Are you talking about drag slicks or something? What tires?

You should make a new thread entitled "Do I need to use tubes with (insert tire model & size here) on (insert your wheels) wheels?"

Which Wilwood Billet NDL calipers are you using? What is Wilwoods part #? Also where did you buy them? Were they in stock or special order?

99 rs brake question---Manny

Manny,

I was looking at getting these from the mazdacomp (too used to saying it) website and they have listed the calipers, rotors, pads, and caliper pins. Was there anything else you saw was needed? What about the anti-rattle clips? The stock one still work?

You can get the prices from the http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/ web site. I think it is around $800-900 for the fronts and about the same for the rears, including pads. It is a great deal for big brakes, but I think it makes sense to do both ends of the car, at least eventually.

They are 4x1.12" piston NDL calipers for 0.81" rotors. I got one installed over the weekend, and I'll have the other one on before SevenStock (so you can see them there if you are going). And no, I am not driving the car with only one rear caliper.

The Wilwood part number is 120-5074. I got mine with pads and custom brake lines and fittings from Scott Refert at Essex Parts Services (http://www.essexparts.com/). Essex has outstanding custom support, better prices than I could find searching for the calipers on the web, and access to more pads and brake parts than any other shop I know of. I would definitely recommend buying from Essex to get this stuff, as they know all about the application and what parts you need (including the brake lines, etc.). I don't get any kick-backs or anything from Essex, I am just really happy with the ease and support they provide for this setup.

I am not sure if they have them in stock, but they were able to ship my parts out within a week, including the custom lines and some "standard" Dynalite street pads modified to clear the bridge bolt on the NDL caliper (they cut the backing plate for you).

Widefoot had the caliper brackets in stock and shipped them out quickly.

MazdaSpeed Motorsports Development had the rotors in stock and shipped them out very quickly.

I have some pics now, I attached one of all the parts to this message.
