I would love to get my rims powder coated a charcoal grey but the shop around here wanted $100 a rim. That wont happen.... I would like to spend 20-40 for each.

I had mine powdercoated in a gunmetal color. Only problem is trying to find some paint to match for the wheelcaps. Has anyone found some spray paint that's close to gunmetal?

Question glass

it's safe to glassbead our rims right??
after you glass bead them does it take them down to the bare metal or just the glossy coat off??
what should i use to refinish them with if i already have glass beaded them??

My friend said sand blasting them would probably take off the finish. I was looking to do that but he seems to think it would be bad for my rims being that they are in nice condition already.

Any word on the number spyfish?

If I had a set of brand new stock FC wheels (the mesh ones), would they need to be glass bead blasted before I powerdercoated them?

yes. powder coat ONLY sticks to metal. Nothing else.

It's not as forgiving as wet paint where u can spray on some dirt.

I have noticed that powdercoating costs vary alot! I would say to search around. The place that did my wheels was an industrial shop. They dont do anything but sandblasting and powder for most industrial applications but have got into the automotive stuff recently. Mine came out very nice. Also there are a few ways depending on the powder to coat them. One is a single stage and one is a duel stage. Many of the colors need a duel stage to get that high gloss. The Duel stage has to go into the oven and get coated a second time and cooked again with the gloss coat. Others like My white was a single stage Gloss. I do not know all the differences but they also can make different textures as well. Its so easy to clean. The brake dust just wipes off with your fingers or a rag. Wont scratch the finish either. Here are my wheels. http://www.jimsusa.com/images/Mvc-013s/Mvc-018s.jpg

I don't know the technique, but I tried 5 other powder coating places before I bumped into this guy.

Sure the price is a little high, but all my friends and customers shut their whining as soon as they see the results. To them it's worth the $$$$.

This guy tried to explain the process on why he get's it so shiny.

Lemme see if I can explain it.

It has something to do with taking the wheels out at 400 degrees and letting it cool to 300 degree and then he applies the powder clear coat formula that he mixed to it.

This allows the powder it immediately seat itself into the primary coat thus forming a strong bond and a VERY shiny coat.

I doubt that the other guys on this forum with that cheap price can get a job done as well as mines...

YOU GET WHAT U PAY FOR......
