When Spring Rate is too high for struts

hey all,

I was curious what happens when your spring rates are too high for the struts on them. What will this make the car do physically when racing (i.e. bouncing, strut failure, uncontrollable)?

I have Illuminas right now with a GC 450f/325r with the struts on 3 front 4 rear with over 3 years on the struts and 1 on the springs. everyone seems to say this # spring is the max for them and i'll most likely be going to the advanced designs. But just curious.

if anyone has any links to stuff like please share. Thanks
Jason

Yes, the springs overoscillate the springs, and the car gets really bouncy.
Drop the Illuminas down to "1", and you'll get an idea of how this feels.

Generally it feels the same as if a shock had gone bad. Car wallows and bounces around.

I had Eiboch Sportlines with KYB GR-2's on my 240sx, (a decently aggressive spring, and not very agressive shock) The physical ride with them, was a double bounce on bumps. The combo has like 20k on it now, and the struts are still holding up fine.. so yeah.. my 2 cents on the subject.

Ted i dropped em down to "1" and took it out for a spin.
it wasnt bad at all, weird cuz it almost seemed smoother.
Not sure if this matters but I have the coilovers raised all the way up for the race tires?? (6" spring front, 8" rear i think)

yea i bumped it with the springs and they match the numbers too.

sra-fd3s, are those in Kg's?

I'm gunna be changing to 315/35/17 front and 335/35/17 rear as i'm at 275/40/17 right now and figured itd be a good time for the higher spring rates. With either struts, unless of course its going to be worse n not worth it.

holy smokes those are huge! do you have wider fenders or is your ride heght high enough to run those tires without rubbing stock fenders?

also, what wheels are you going to use for those tire sizes?

I ask because I would LOVE to run that big a setup, or at least 285 in front and 315 out back.

thanks...

yes the M sport Fenders front and back. They'll be going on CCW race 17x11 and 17x12's or there abouts, waiting to get fenders on so i can properly size them.

Sm2

Jason I just love it when all those new kids come out to play. The new kids get to learn why my plates say SPANK.

I look forward to racing against you. Round 3 Pro-Solo Castle Airport May 7-8. National Tour April 30- May 1.

Now would be an appropriate time for Andy M to speak up.
