wheel and tire sizes for a 2nd gen

OK heres my major question. What size tires can fit up under a 2nd gen. Im looking at probably going with 17's all around for rims but I don't know what the offsets are. I think I heard 38mm but that doesnt sound right. Anyway Im not too worried about out back I think I can get 285's out there with little trouble (Guessing from the space around the 245's). Its the front Im real curious about. I think I read that Soul Assassin was running 275's up front and that would be awsome but I am also betting he did lots of custom work to do that. I dont want to go to that much trouble. I am looking to replace the stock struts and springs with some sort of coil over to hopefully gain a little more space but I am at a loss of ideas and information here.

Thanks for your help.

Here is what I know for a fact will work becuase I have test fitted the rims on my t2. A 17x8 with a 38 offset will fit great in the front with a 235/45/17. In the rear a 18x9 with also a 38 offset will fit perfect with a 255/40/17. If you are wanting to go 275 in the rear you will need a different offset in the rear because with the 38 offset there isnt much room for bigger than a 255. But those are rim size and offsets and tire size I know for a fact will work and fit nicely.
