I think red looks best on red cars, but black or silver would look good too.

I'm not a big fan of red and yellow together, for some reason it remoinds me of McDonalds....ummm, Big Mac....

There is a red Civic running around by my office with yellow lettering, yellow wipers, yellow stripes, and yellow screen in the grill to protect the non-existent fmic. I call it the McCivic!

I was inspired to do the yellow on red after I saw a Porsche 993 turbo with HUGE yellow calipers.
FWIW,

How are you guys painting them? Paint the entire caliper and sand off the letters back to silver? or are you painting the letters.
Whats the best red paint?

You need to use a high temp paint. This may sound a bit funny, but the paint used for grills works great. Something similar to a flat black looks best in my opinion. Then you just use some sand paper to clean off the Mazda letters until they look "silver."

The better way to do this is to get actual brake caliper paint. A friend of mine and I have done our calipers as I described above and it has held just fine. Keep in mind that we only do one or two high speed driving events a year though. So we don't heat up the calipers that often.

I got my caliper paint at:

California Custom Coatings

http://www.cacustomcoatings.com/

nice kit, with good instructions. I've had mine painted for over 2 years with no problems

The kit is probably isn't necessary, as you can buy hi-temp paint at any auto parts store, but I think the prep items included in the kit make it worth while

I painted mine with plain Testors model paint from a rattle can. Been a few months and so far hard use at the track nor wheel cleaner have phased them at all. Holds up great and there is a very wide variety of colors.

The BIG advantage to using "CALIPER" paints is they are Laquer based and spilled Brake Fluid won't dissolve it, like it dissolves other enamel based paints, including HIGH TEMP engine enamels (ask me how I know ) I use Plasticote Brake Caliper paint from Pep Boys and polish the lettering w/ 600/1000/1500 grit wet sand paper after painting

Okay. I will take the bait. How do you know?

I would have used caliper paint, but I kind of did mine on a whim and couldn't find any caliper paint that I liked locally.

I think black would look good on red, or red, silver.

I actually painted my calipers with testors model paint.. the ones that come in the little jars.
I really did not even clean the calipers up very well just kinda cleaned them up with brake
cleaner. so far after about 8 months the paint has not flaked off at all and still looks fine.

I have red on my MB and it looks awesome. I think I would prefer red or black on a VR.

Question - mine was done by a previous owner a while ago and it is all red. I want to make the MAZDA silver - if I just sand the paint off...won't it rust?

And if anyone has painted the lettering how do you do it and stay in the lines? (I failed kindergarten)

Nah I wouldn't prefer yellow calipers on a VR, it's just too flashy for me. I'm trying to keep my color theme red/black, so I'd probably go with black......

But DAMN mako that color on your calipers, is that gold/copper? It looks damn nice!

You know, the calipers come from the factory unpainted right? Which is OK because the calipers are made of aluminum.....

MAKO: That bronze/gold looks very different but I LIKE it!

Thanks for the comments, its kinda a gold bronze mix. its really pretty subtle most of the time unless your in direct sunlight or something.
I was not really sure of the color, but thats the nice thing about paint is if you don't like the color you can always change it.

I painted my MAZDA logo silver using Testor's model paint (wow, 3 Testor's references in one thread?), and a very fine camel hair brush. The letters are big enough so that even those who failed kindergarten should be able to make it look nice.

good luck!
