unobtainium bushings: grease fittings or no?
unobtainium bushings: grease fittings or no?
All of the bushings are installed in the a arms for my car now and I'm
waiting for my advance design struts to arrive. I've bought all the zerk
fittings and stuff I need to install them, but am now having second thoughts
about installing the fittings so I figured I'd turn to the list for
opinions.
Has anyone installed the bushings and had intolerable squeaking that was
definitely the bushings? (not strut or strut spring seats, etc)
If you had squeaking, were you able to narrow it down to one particular
pivot that was squeaking ? (I'd then install the fittings only in that one
joint pair)
If you disassembled the joint and lubricated it, did that solve the
problem, and if so, has it reoccurred?
I planned originally to assemble the bushings dry, because my past
experience has shown that the grease only attracts dirt and makes things
worse; I was going to install all the fittings anyway so IN CASE any joints
acted up I could grease them.
The car is only driven on the street for the purpose of getting to the
track, so there should be minimal road gunk, I hope. (that said, I've
driven thru rain and even SNOW on the way to some of these drivers schools!)
Your thoughts??
Thanks!

Do it, I installed mine a few months ago, similar situation weekend track car and mine are getting very noisy in the rear. I will be pulling them back out to add the fittings soon. BTW you will love these bushing on the track, the car is just so much more responsive and predictable. You will also find the suspension alignment is easier to set and the values are much more precise since the bushings don't flex like the stock rubber.
I am curious if others have noticed there bushings getting noisy, I am guessing yes hence the suggestion to add grease fittings.

Well, OK then I installed the fittings. Make sure you get 1/4-28's, #3 drill bit and a bottoming tap, that way you don't have to drill thru to the plastic. Also a 3/32 bit for the grease to get to the pins!. I'm going to run with them dry until they start to make noise. Grainger has everything for the job.
I did mines dry. No grease fittings.
I did use grease on the metal inserts.
No squeaking at all, except the diff ones, kind of annoying when stereo is turned off, and no foot on the throtle, but usually I do not drive like that
))
So far so good, and nice feeling, especially when high speed turning.

I have not taken time to figure out which piece is squeaking yet on mine. How did you determine that your squeak was comming from the Differential mount? Mine squeaks over any kind of bump, at any speed, so I am pretty sure it is asuspension bushing. It just started up all of a sudden about two weeks ago.
