Brake manufacturers say a 1mm clearance isn't enough, when brakes warm up during track use they move during operation from 1-2mm plus they exert heat and during the movement they can even cause the warping of the wheel. Brake caliper to wheel clearance is crucial and is very important.

My calipers made their own clearance on my track rims.
