i need a fairly cheap price (under 70 bucks) tire, with good grip, and good tread life. i autox occasionaly. its for a daily driver, that i drive pretty "spiritedly". also since its a DD, it would be nice to have at least some grip in the snow. i was originally looking for just all season tires, but im not sure if i want to sacrifice the dry grip for the few days i have to drive in the snow.

so far im considering:

kuhmo ecsta 711- $52, summer tires



falken ziex ze 512- $54, all season



i was originally planning on getting those falkens, and im still leaning towards them.

 

You autocross your DD?

I doubt these can handle snow, but for my DD I prefer the Yokohama es100's. They're a good value for the price.

Toyo TPT rawks in the rain and snow. AVS ES100 is pretty good, but not so hot on snow. Pirelli PZero Nero M+S is a great tire with tons of treadlife (400 rating), so its worth the little extra you pay. If you're looking at 712s you might as well go with the Ecsta Supra MX. If you need snow action, go with the Ecsta Supra ASX.

the reviews on the ziex 512s have been good...keep in mind this isnt the same tire as the previous ziex model.

You aren't going to find a "great" tire for the money you are looking to spend (if you are looking in the $50-60 per tire range). I'm running the ES100's on my FD (255/40/17's). While they aren't the grippiest things on th planet, they aren't bad (better than the crappy Goodyears I replaced). Sidewalls aren't all that stiff but you aren't going to find a tire with a stiff sidewall at that price anyways.

If you plan to AutoX with the tires, I would recommend spending a little more money on a better tire (something like Toyo Proxes T1-S). I have a separate set of track rims so the ES100's do what I need on the street.

 

I seriously doubt that. But like I said I use them on my DD with no problems, but then again I don't autocross my DD so maybe you should up your budget and get something a little better.

 

The 711 is by far the worst of all tires mentioned so far.

 

I wrote a shitty review for the ES100s on the tire rack. I'm sure there are many others. I wound up sending them back. I now have the Bridgestone 750, which is a huge improvement, especially for a tire that is considered to be in the same category as the ES100.

 

Spend more money and get something decent. I learned alot of good lessons this year on how tires affect your car. I don't think theres a single other thing you can change that will make as much difference...good or bad... than a set of tires.

 

The RE750's are also significantly more then the ES100's (how much more obviously will depend on the wheel size).

 

It's true that the 750's are more expensive. The ES100's were unacceptable. I feel strongly that I must have confidence in the tires I ride on. Even if the ES100's were FREE, they were below my minimal standard for performance. That's right, this cheap bastard would not use them even if they were free!!

 

What car were you running the ES100's on? For a car with the performance of an RX-7 I would think twice before putting that tire on. But on my 130hp integra they hold up just fine even with some spirited street driving.

I respect your opinion, but I stand by my statement of the ES100's being the best bang for your buck.

 

The ES100s were for the FD. I have driven on many Yokohama tires over the years, and was very surprised when this tire didn't live up to expectations. I expected it to perform better than my worn out Bridgestone 730s. From the articles I read, they were supposed to be in the same category. The ES100 performed like an inexpensive tire. I was just expecting more.

 

Ahhh, I think I understand your disatisfaction now. I would not expect the ES100's to perform to the same standards as the mid class Bridgestone tires priced $30+ more.

I agree that any tire you're going to put on the 7 should have much better traction. I myself prefer the S-03 pole positions. They're expensive, but deliver on performance.
