Tires General Rule of Thumb?

what are the basic rules to choosing tires for different sizing rims? How should tires be chosen in comparison of the section width/height and the rim width/diameter? i've been searching both the forum and the web for info on this and didnt came up with much useful

Keep the diameters near stock to avoid rubbing, especially in front. You can go a little bigger in the rear.

Look at the spec sheet for the specific tire model and size you are considering to check the rim width range. Tire Rack has spec sheets with this information for all the tires they sell. Tire manufacturers often have spec sheets on their web sites as well.
