Those tires will fit, but a better match would be a 225 on an 8" wheel, this combo gives fairly straight sidewalls without being stretched at all, a 255 on a 9" should give about the same effect (same amount of difference between tire and rim width).

When I put my 225/45/17 shod 17x8's on the ground lying flat on their faces the rim lip/bead/whatever you want to call it touches the ground ever so slightly.

For most tires, an 8" wide wheel is the widest recommended for a 215, a 9" wheel is the widest recommended for a 245.

You could probably go with an 8.5" wide rim with the 245 and save some money and have a lighter rim.

I have 9" wide rim with 255s and they fit well. I would think the 245 might be a bit stretched on my wheel.

Tire Rack's site has some good info on recommended tires/wheel widths.
