Question Tire size vs application & performance

I didn't see any threads as stickies or in the archives, is there a thread about applications? Power levels to rubber on the road?

That's because there are too many variables. i.e. a tire that will give you great traction for a drag launch is not going to give you fantastic cornering. Also, most people are on a fixed wallet. With that, sometimes going with a more narrow but stickier compound leads to better results than going wider but a less sticky compound. It all comes down to what the car is going to be used for and whether you are trying to maximize getting out of the gate or going through the slaloms.

Perhaps we can use this thread for posting people's setups? Kinda like the dyno/ET threads?

I'm hoping to gain and document a bit of knowledge before I invest in wheels and tires this spring.

I think Mahjik has brought up a good point that it's hard to make generalizations. It's especially true when you consider dual-purpose cars.

Well, again, it depends on your use which you need to define. A road racer's setup is not going to work for a drag racer and vice versa. The other thing is that very few people (myself not included) actually can validate their wheel/tire choices. Outside of a few road racers like Howard, people don't generally take temperature readings and optimized their suspension/aero around their tire setups. I would love to do that, however, it's honestly too much effort for me since I'm only "playing" a race car driver. Aside from getting people to post up what they are using, I don't know that you'll get "data" to back up their setups.

I'm not suggesting that you don't try to get said data, but just trying to set expectations and maybe get you to try and ask a more direct question rather than sampling setups which may not get you close to an answer.

FWIW, I have 17x9 with 255/40's on the street. For the track, I currently use the stock 16x8's with 245's. I'll be looking to switch to something like a Diamond Racing wheel at 16x9 for a full racing slick. I would estimate my car is probably around 320rwhp.
