I got these rims that are 18 by 8 1/2 in the front and 18 by 9 1/2 in the back, I was wondering what size tire, and profile they should be. I think its 235/35/18 in the front and 265/35/18 in the back, but the shop and tire rack says that the front should be 235/40/18. Why is it that the profile in the front is more then the back? Would this cause any problems? If there is any tire that you recomend, do so.

 

Ideally, you want to the new wheel/tire combo to be the same or almost the same circumference as the stock wheel/tire, irrespective of the profile.

235/40/18 is the correct fitment. BTW, have you tried looking for a 235/35/18 size tire? Other than one model of Pirelli (PZero), no one makes it.

 

235/40 and 265/35 would be the correct sizes. Tire choice is personal but has been discussed many, many times. Please use the search function.

BTW, what kind of wheels are they? Offsets?

 

There BBS LM 115's, I have no idea what the offset are because they were a gift to me. Would it look weird if i put the 235/35 in the front and the 265/35 in the back, or there meant to have 235/40 in the front.

 

1. 235/40 and 265/35 have the same sidewall height. I suggest you read about what the numbers mean, a good layman's guide is on www.tirerack.com under Tire Tech.

2. While you are at the Tire Rack, read about wheel offsets. It's very likely that the wheels you got as a gift won't fit properly on an FD. You NEED to know the offsets before proceding any further. Many times, the offset is stamped somewhere on the wheel, either on the rim or the backplate. For those wheel sizes, you will want an offset of +40 to +50.

3. You should also verify that the bolt pattern will work, FDs require 5/114.3mm.

4. You will need centering rings to properly mount the wheels. You can pick them up from discounttiredirect on ebay for only $15 shipped.

 

The wheels were ordered for a 93 rx7 so Im pretty sure that the offset and the bolt pattern will fit my car. Unfortunately my car is in the shop now so I won't find out if they fit till I get my car back.

 

I just looked at the TireRack for those wheels -- both sizes have a +38 offset -- that is an aggressive fitment. If you are lowered with the typical lowering springs (Eibach, H&R, etc), you may have problems catching the fender lips entering driveways, etc. You'll just have to learn to be very careful in those situations.

In any case, 235/40 and 265/35 are the correct sizes. Tire Rack should have supplied centering rings with the wheels, if not, give them a call.
