tire help

I just bought my first FD, and I'm wondering what tires to put on it (I've got 17" Antera wheels). Is there a tire FAQ somewhere that will help? I'm guessing this type of thing has been asked alot, so I don't want to **** anyone off. Is there a good thread you can point me to?

Everyone runs into this. I am currently in question as to how wide I can fit on my car... Do you know the specs of the rims? (diameter, width, offset?) I have no idea what the offset is on the rims that came with my car so I am having trouble knowing how wide I can go, CALLING RISHIE!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Well, as for my perdicament, not to steal your thread or anything but I hate it when there is 2 conserning the same thing I currently have 17x7.5F and 17x10R, dont know the offset, they were on the car when I bought it. I plan on putting 225 45 17 in front(maybe 40 series if I can find some) and I want to put 265 40 17 in rear but I am not sure if I will have probs with rubbing... where are all the gurus at? its time for your expertise to come into play...

LARacer: post your wheel widths, offsets, and any other suspension mods you have.

futurerxowner:

Ugh, 7.5" wide wheels? Why do people go narrower than stock?

Anyways, you should run 225/45 17s on the front, 225/40 will be a bit smaller wheel+tire diameter than stock and will also severely lower the load ratings of the front -- leading to easier blowouts. You should not rub with this tire size.

With the 17x10s, you probably already have some suspension mods in the rear. With those wide wheels, you could run up to 285/35 17s (with coil-overs) but that would probably mean a LOT of understeer. You should probably run like 255/40 or 265/40 17s (255/40 is the stock wheel+tire diameter).

This is of course depending on factors such as vehicle lowering and offsets.

Yeah, what rynberg said

Say, rynberg, I'm excited--where did you find 285/35-17 tire sizes! That's perfect for a 10 x 17 wheel!

open mouth, insert foot OR pull head out of ***

I guess I should have double-checked to make sure that size existed. Kind of like that 275/30 18 recommendation.....

I could of swore I saw one of the AMG cars running that size BTW, but I must be mistaken.

Apologies.

EDIT: BTW, I just noticed you can buy a 215/35 18 tire. That is just ridiculous. Nice sidewall height of 75mm. Would LOVE to see the rims on that car after a blast down a midwest highway!

I was thinking more like what brand of tire should I buy. It's got Dunlop Sport 8000's right now (with almost no tread left!), which seems to be a fairly good compramise between performance and price. Do you guys use more high-performance tires than that? I don't race or anything, just drive "spiritedly" on the mountain roads out here.

I'm running SP 8000s right now as well. I think they're one of the best for the price -- under $100/each for stock size. Obviously, newer tires such as S-03s, Pirelli Pzeros, Yokohama Sports will be better but more expensive.

Yokohama AVS I's

are a great deal, if there are any left in your size...I run 255/40-17s on 9 x 17 SSR IA2s (42-mm offsets), and they're fantastic for what I use them for--combination of road/track/autocross/wet-track! I don't expect them to last past Dec (I bought them new in Feb '02), but hey--at $94 each for 255/40-17s, I'd gladly get a new set this winter

rynberg--well it was too good to be true--oh well, 285/30-18s (on 10 x 18s) are the widest we can go all the way around on the FD Rx7 anyway (given 2.5-inch coilovers), so...

Most of the UHP and MHP street tires will satisfy your needs. I had the SP8000's and personally didn't like them. They wore really quickly and traction sucked after the halfway mark. If price is no object, hands-down, Bridgestone Potenza S03's. The Yoko AVS Sports are also good. BFG KD's are awesome, from what I hear, but ouch ... they really ding you for them.

If you're trying to be more modest in your spending, then BFG KDW's, Bridgestone RE730's, Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP's, and the Yoko AVS Intermediates. I'm very satisfied with the BFG KDW's and SleepR1 can sing the praise for the AVS Intermediates. I know lots of Vette guys who are fanatic about the Firehawks.

If you can still get them, the best bang-for-the-buck are the Yokohama AVS Intermediates. 235/40's - $63; 255/40's - $94 at www.tirerack.com. They're on closeout right now, so get 'em while you still can.
