Question Tire choices for stock FC BBS wheels

There doesn't seem to be too many high performance choices for the stock 15" tire size. I've searched the forums for more information but only find wheel/tire information for people plus sizing.

There aren't too many high performance choices in the stock 205-60-15 size and going to a 225-50-15 seems like it might be too short. I was just wondering what everybody else is running. The BFG G-force Sport is looking like my top choice right now. I'd really like to run a tire simlar in performance to the Kumho MX or the Hankook RS-2.

The car is a bone stock 91 vert. I wouldn't mind the better gearing from the shorter 225 tire, but would the wheel gap look silly?

Thanks for the help!

Are you talking about the ZE 512? I was hoping for something a little stickier than that.

make that two of us.... i m in need for new tires.... i ve had yokohama avs db s2's and they're great but 205 60 15R have been limited in options for other tires...i use to have some toyo proxes but i dont feel like fishin out 95 a piece...and was kind of curious if there are any other vert owners that have tried other wider tires on original bbs wheels....move this one to the top

BFG G-force sport

So this is the best looking option I've found so far. Since they are still doing the free shipping at discount tire direct, you should be able to get your local discount tire to match the price and do mounting and balancing for around $40.

Hopefully somebody else has some ideas.

One thing you need to do at tire shops, ask them how much to mount and balance FIRST. If you ask them to match a price on some tires your price for installation will go up suddenly to the most they can charge. Dont let them try and get you for shipping costs too, the big chain stores have it within their deals to match price only. If they give you any trouble call the regional manager and you will be taken care of beautifully =)
I was a tech at Tire Kingdom for a little while and I saw the most shady things happen there.

Has anybody run these tires before. They sound good but the tread pattern doesn't look too sporty (lots of void area, no big tread blocks). I've been fooled by that before. One of the best street tires I've ever run was the P-zero Nero on my M3 and they don't have a very aggressive tread pattern.

all season= poop. Even if they do consider it a high performance all season tire, still no good. Good for lasting a long time

I agree about the all season tires. I'm used to running the Falken Azenis RT-215 and Hankook RS-2.

Has anybody run the G-force sport???

Why don't you stick with the RS-2? I assume it comes in 225/50/15, although I'm not sure. I know Falken RT615 does not, so you're out of luck there, because that would be the stickiest street tire you can get.

That is a good point, but it reverts back to one of my initial questions:

Is a 225/50-15 too short? I'd like the better gearing of a shorter tire, but how bad will the speedo be off, and will the car (on stock springs/shocks) look like a 4x4? There is a 0.8" difference in overall diameter.

Hi
Just my 2 cents worth. I have autocrossed on 225/50/15 Hoosiers autocross tires. They are generally a very wide, short 225/50/15. The gearing change is great, speedo, I don't know. Visually from the side, I did not see a giant gap, the .8 difference is really half that as the car comes down with the change.
I will go with the 225/50/15 when I change street tires again.
PS I tried the 225/45/15 Hoosier autocross tires and they rub the spring/strut inside front, so a spacer is needed.

i have ASX for my winter tires on my stockers and they are good to have fun in... ie getting a little loose. but i drive 615's for my summer tires and they are much better.... the ASX lacks some feel but for the kind of tire it is it has enough grip even if some feedback is lost but the tread life is great....

So I haven't been driving the car as hard as thought I would. The vert is more of a cruiser and I've got the Miata race car to abuse. That said, I'm about 90% sure I'll be getting a set of Kumho ASXs. They're a tiny bit more expensive than the Falkens, but still under $50 each.

A friend of mine with an Accord has a set of the Falkens in the same size and said that they were skinny for their size and not that impressive.

I'll post my opinions after I drive on the new tires for a bit. Thanks for all the suggestions!

It's mainly because I'm finding that I don't drive the vert as hard as I thought I would. I don't think I will need the kind of grip the G-force sport looks like it has. I don't plan on racing the RX-7 (that's what the Miata is for) so it should only see commuting and cruises. The ASX will be more than enough grip for that stuff, have better treadware, cost less and will probalby be quieter.

The BF Goodrich seems like it is the most performance oriented option in the size. BTW, don't bother with the Yoko ES100. I had a set on the M3 and hated them.

So I've been driving on the Kumho ASX (205-60-15) for the last few weeks, and I think I made the right choice. The tires are very comfortable and quiet, have a decent amount of grip, and have no problems in water.

They do squeal quite a bit under cornering, but that is expected from an all-season tire. I purchased them for around $45/each from a local discount tire because they will match the Tire Rack price and take off an extra 10%.

They're not as sticky as what I'm used to but they're pretty good all around tires.

Good thread, I will be looking into tires for my vert sometime soon. I plan on trying out the 225/50s, although I am a bit apprehensive about such wide tires on a 6.5 inch rim.....

A 225 tire on the stock wheel should be fine. I've done much worse on my Miata. When I was running in SCCA E-stock, I had a 9.5" wide Hoosier stuffed onto a stock 6" wide wheel.

On the other hand, running a wider tire on a skinnier wheel isn't a great situation b/c you aren't using the optimal contact patch. If you are going to do this, buy a tire with a stiff sidewall.
