According to the tire rack anyway. It recently beat out three other pretty damn good tires in a recent tire rack test, so I was at least considering it, until I saw the treadwear rating of 300. They're available in 285/30/18. Have any other high hp guys used these as street tires?

Meh, I haven't heard fantastic things about the other competitors. Definitely not the street tire I would buy from bridgestone if I had the money. But if you're not really going to compete on these tires, they should be fine I suppose.

For performance driving, I wouldn't quite trust Sumitomo just yet. I know a few guys who tried their previous tires and they threw them into the trash within 500 miles.

 

I used them once on one of my FC Turbo II back in the day.

At the time, they had copied Dunlop's D40 M2 or SP8000 tread pattern which was pretty good back then. They were OK but I wouldn't trust them either. Especially on a high HP car.

 

Try Federal 595EVO's

 

General UHP Exclaim are worth a try too.

 

Since posting this thread, I've decided I'm going to stick with top of the line tires....over the years, I've ran S02s, S03s, and BFG KDs on my R1, and (now that I'm making more power than ever) I don't think I can gamble when it comes to tire quality.

 

First ever track events I did with the blue 1st gen were on 195/50/15 HTRZ's. It was a GOOD tire, did everything I expected it to. Drove willow, buttonwillow, and sears on those tires.

 

^Remember that it also depends a lot on the car. I used Kumho 712s on a Miata which I drove the **** out at Lime Rock and they were pretty good. However, I didn't like them on my FD.

 

Get the Bridgestone RE-01R, Advan Neova AD07, or maybe even the Falken Azenis RT-615/Hankook RS-2 if you want something cheap.

i have 1000 miles on my first set of "Heaters".... it won't be long til i am ontrack w them and we will learn alot more.

i will say that last week i hooked an 80 mph turn on a 2 lane road and was totally blown away w how they stuck. no noise, no squirm (they are shaved to 6/32). i run 255s and 295s.

nephew Aaron and i will both be running these tires at the "Shootout at the O K Corral" deal we are doing this summer at BlackHawk Farms.

I'm considering these for my DD set and for the price can't go wrong.

 

ive used sumitomo tires on alot of my cars.. even my bmw.. i like them for DD..

 

any updates on these? My old HTR Z II's are near the end of their life. I was thinking Toyo T1R's but they seem to be more expensive than I remember. What about HTR Z III vs Falken Azenis RT-615? The HTR Z III's seem to be cheaper than Azenis. Are you getting any value for the extra money if buying the Azenis over the Sumitomo's?

Wet traction is not an issue, the car never sees rain. It might do one HPDE a year. I mostly do back roads driving and some high horsepower pulls in the straight line. I just want something that will help keep my back end planted if I apply any boost in a turn.

 

What size are ya looking at and what is your approx budget?

 

Rich- I live near you in CT and DD for 8 to 9 months out of the year. I’ve been using them this season-switched from PS2s. The Sumos were great in the summer & ok in the rain...but I really don't care for them now that the weather has gotten cooler. Yes, they were much less expensive than my PS2s but they don't inspire nearly as much confidence in cooler weather- Bill.

 

Falken is sumitomo rubber corp's "performance" division.

If you want close to an R-COMP then the RT615 is the tire to pick.

These look more like an all season. I love my Dunlop Star specs for street tires, and don't plan on changing soon.

 

This is tricky. On my T2 I have some 17x7 wheels and 225/45/17 HTRz II's that were originally on my nonturbo FC a few years ago. Because the setup on my car is built more for topend power than low end torque, the traction is actually better than you would expect in a straight line. 1st gear is fine unless I give it more than 1/2 throttle and 2nd gear will hook unless it's cold out. Cornering isn't bad but I'm always afraid that if I dial in any throttle I'll end up in a ditch.

I've been told that you can't really fit 245's on 17x7's. And given the economy and my personal financial situation, especially after blowing so much money on a motor build and turbo upgrade, I can't afford wheels in the near future. But my tires on the way out. So that pretty much leaves me with 225's all the way around right?

As for the budget, well it partly depends on what I'm getting for my money. I know the Azenis Rt-615 will be a better tire, but with such a pitiful size will it be worth spending the extra money? I think we're talking about 35 or 40 more per tire, which is money I can save or spend on other things the car needs like OEM interior parts.

 

Actually, your Star specs out perform the RT-615's handily.

I wish I could give a good high HP review of the ZIII's, but the best I can say is that I have put an autox in on a set of 215/40/18 ZIII's, and they performed far better than I was expecting. However, even on my maybe ~110-120 whp FC, the rears would break free at corner exit, so I would suspect that the higher horsepower guys will have a harder time getting traction with these, even in a straight line.

You're in luck.... tire rack has the Hankook RS2s in the 225/45-17 size on closeout and in stock at $78 per tire.

I'd jump all over them, I have been running them on my track wheels on the street and been impressed with the level of grip.....265s out back with 400+ rwhp.
