Sticky fronts on 85FB = autox happiness!

Fell on this one by chance, or should I say desperation...

Q: What do you do with 3 good autocross tires/wheels on your RX?

A: Put the two good ones on the front and let the good times roll!

Seriously I found that if I run my Yoko AVS's on the front and my street Sumitomo's on the rear (both 205 60 13's but with 6" wheels on the front) my 85 GS is cured of alot of it's handling woes. Specifically the horrid understeer/snap oversteer of the 1st gens.

My car: RB springs front, cut stock rear (rubbing problems w the RB's), Illumina's all around, RB non adjust front bar, stock rear. Poly bushings everywhere. Good everyday driver/autocross car but not very fast with the Sumi's. 45psi front, 35psi rear as a general rule.

How does it handle with this setup? (and I'll admit it looks a bit odd wheel wise) Just great, the front end sticks like glue with only a little understeer and braking is improved over the Sumi's, too. At the limit there IS some oversteer but it is progressive and easily collected with the steering/ throttle, none of the sudden, heart stopping snap of the equal tire setup.

I think that is because the rear tires let go before the suspension has a chance to windup/bind: the rear suspension never gets near it's limits and thus works freely, while the stickier front tires kill some of the usual 1st gen understeer.

I know that this is not a total cure or a substitute for a proper suspension (i.e.; G-Force Tri-link and camber spacers) but it works well for my car/combo. Of course if you use slicks normally this setup would not work at all, but if you have two tires that are slightly better than two others you might have some improvement.

WARNING!!!!!!!!! This setup is VERY loose on the street!!! I am VERY careful when driving to the track like this ESPECIALLY IN THE RAIN!!!! (I don't have very far to drive at least) High speed (that is normal highway) corners are tiptoe only!!! I accept NO responsibility for your actions/accidents/problems if you run like this on the street!!! This setup NOT recommended for a high speed race track, Auto-Cross ONLY!!!

Better yet bolt the race fronts on at the track: an advantage is you only have to carry 2 tires, a bonus for the 1st gens!!!

Sanspistons for stronger, faster RX's
