Steering Rack Rebuild?

Hi everybody,

My car is undergoing a swap and I'm trying to freshen up some of the pieces while I have everything torn down. My steering rack has some mileage on it and the boots are torn, so I figured now's the perfect time to send it off and have it rebuilt.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a vendor that does good rack rebuilds? Someone suggested Maval so I called them today and haven't gotten a response back yet, but I'm leaning towards them. I would like to have it rebuilt with OEM parts or at least to OEM specifications, so quality is important to me.

Thanks, looking forward to everyones responses

While I can't suggest anyone for that task, you should put some thought into if are you going to rebuild the rack for PS or manua.

The manual obviously omits the pump and lines, but makes things a little more responsive (read 'twitchy') at higher speeds.

Probably retain PS, though the manual conversion is tempting. I think if I were to do that, I'd pick up an Atomic Rex rack.

Heard good things about that... I think you can get different steering ratios in that, but I could be mistaking theirs for someone else's.

Mine is looped. . .love it. . . also drove an FD with the Atomic Rex rack, wasn't impressed and wouldn't think of spending the money for it. . .

Owner isn't all that impressed with it either. . .

Maval Gear should be able to rebuild the rack. They basically rebuild the rack when people convert to a manual rack so rebuilding it and keeping the power assist plumbing should be easier.

I've heard of people basically just connecting the two lines, while the rack's full of fluid and getting it over with.

'Least that has a LITTLE help in both the stability and aid in ease of turning.

ATM, mine's manual just by disconnection of the pump, and that's the route I'm thinking of going.
