Steering quickeners

Has anyone used one of these before?

I wonder if RX-7 column splines are the same size as GM splines?

If not, what would it take to get an adapter? And what would it take to install one of these?

I assume you'd have to at least fab up a bracket of some sort in the engine bay (since I don't think there's much room to install them inside the interior), and it would need to be fairly strong to hold it in place (because of all the torque put into the steering).

Also, what kind of mods would you have to make to the column to fit in between the rack and the column?

Or do they make them to replace the section between the U-joint and the rack?

This would probably be much more worthwhile than spending 2K on a rack from Race Tek (although they only have them for Subarus to begin with), or trying to search out a 15.2:1 rack just for a 12% gain.

I wonder if you'd have to beef up the power steering as well...

I heard that Rhys Millen uses one in his drifting car... and for cars with the 17.5:1 rack, it would make even driving on the street much more sporty, and spirited driving a lot easier (having to turn the wheel past 180 degrees at high lateral loads is not easy or fun).

Of course a even a 1.5 increase in ratio might be overkill... since with the S5 GTU rack, you'd end up with a ratio under 12 (compared to 17-ish), and far less with the S4 power/S5 turbo power racks... a 2:1 rack would be nuts (think Go Kart...except with 1400 pounds of weight over much wider tires).

Theres a company that modifies your steering column with a steering quickener. Unfortunately I dont remember the name of the company. Ill look it up and post the contact info tomorrow. Maybe they can answer some of your questions.

These devices are pretty straight forward. They merely mount gears in between the steering wheel and the steering rack and gear up your steering wheel input to produce a higher input at the rack. Keep in mind they will also increase steering effort due to the loss in mechanical advantage. Yes, it will need to be solidly mounted.

Well, I'm thinking of just getting a 15:1 rack and depowering it... the last thing I'd need is a 11.9:1 rack with no PS, and I'd just end up out-steering the pump (easy enough to do WITHOUT the quickener) with a quickener with the 17:1 PS rack... unless it was modified.
