Stance Coilovers: FD3S Review

Auto RnD Review: Stance Coilovers for FD3S
By Brian Watson
1994 Mazda RX-7

What I am looking for: I’ve owned my FD for about 6-7 months now and I have just been driving it to get used to it and making sure no kind of problems come up. I finally decided that I want to go for a suspension upgrade. After debating between springs for a while, I decided to go with a set of coilovers because of the use of adjusting ride height and all the ride options. My car is a daily driving and I’m going more for a show car than a track/drag car so looks were a concern where I was just going to decide on getting Tein Basics. Rishie convinced me to pay a little more for the Stance coilovers as he gave me an amazing price on them. I was concerned not knowing about them or having any reviews, but I trusted Rishie and Auto RnD and went ahead with the purchase. It took about 4-5 weeks for the coilovers to get here as I was first going to get 10/10 spring settings, but ended up getting 12/12 from all the reviews I heard. As I said, I wanted a aggressive drop and a soft ride.

July 20, 2006: After talking to Dana on the phone in the morning, I was setup to bring my car in to get them installed. I told Dana what I was looking for in the install, basically a slammed ride but with a good ride still and he told me to bring it in. My Dad brought it in, and I told Dana that he would get picked up by my mom, but she wasn’t able to make it, so my dad stayed there. They felt bad and they got two guys working on my car to get it done as soon as they could. (I want to apologize to Auto RnD if you felt rushed and you didn’t have to put two people on the car, but just shows their class) Took a couple of hours to install it and my Dad drove the car back while I was still at work. Hour after hour I was waiting for it to end so I could go home and see the car. After work and long traffic, I finally got home and immediately had a smile on my face. I could tell the rear was lowered a good bit and the front was just perfect. I grabbed my keys, got in the car and got on the road. Let me tell you guys this, for 12/12 springs, this car glides. A lot better than my Tokiko struts that I had before. The car is stuck to the ground, amazing handling and just makes the car feel so strong. During hard accelerations my back end doesn’t bounce up and down anymore. It doesn’t lose traction, nothing. I can carve up turns like nothing. After just a couple minutes of driving, I knew my money was well spent and Auto RnD defiantly has my service again when I go for wheels. I will follow up with more reviews as they break in.

July 21, 2006: A new day brings new happiness with my coilovers. I’m not going to go into too much detail as I did the first day, but I finally able to really drive the car pretty hard into the turns and the car didn’t budge. In a whole, it feels as though the car is just a totally different one. The handling is amazing and the ride feels great for a 12/12 spring rating, tons better than what I had before. The car is also a lot more fun to drive now, seeing that I gassed up yesterday morning, and this evening, I have to go and gas up. I’ve been driving every chance I can get. The car is so much more stable too when acceleration. Like I said, my car used to “jump” up and down during acceleration or down shifting. Now the coilovers hold the car steady and solid. Another day, another smile!

July 23, 2006: After driving on the coilovers for a while I still cannot have any complaints. Today I decided to take a drive up Highway 17 towards Santa Cruz. For the locals, Highway 17 is a windy road through the hills. Going towards Santa Cruz I couldn’t really test it because there was traffic like no other as everyone was trying to go to the beach plus it being a really hot day, lots of cars were overheating. On the way down the hill I was able to test it into the turns and again, perfection. Little body roll in the car, and the car was solid going in and out of the turns. The car goes in tomorrow for the alignment and I will be done with my first purchase from Auto RnD.

In conclusion, I am defiantly happy with my purchase from Rishie of Auto RnD. Not only do they have great guys working there who know their stuff, but they are local for me. The Stance coilovers gave me the kind of aggressive drop that I was looking for, yet still able to give me a pretty good ride as a daily driver. It has made the car so much more fun to drive and just seems like a totally different car in a good way. No more clanks, no more loose rear, everything is together and solid as one. For the price Auto RnD is selling the Stance coilovers for, there is nothing better on the market you can get. Once again, I would like to thank Rishie and Dana and all of Auto RnD for all the great customer service. I look forward to doing more business with them.

Have you had a chance to mess around with the dampening yet? I still have not messed with mine yet. I am still very happy with these coilovers. I am glad there is another satisfied customer.

Here is an update of the car with the stance coilovers on. I just washed it (it's been a while) so I had to take some pictures with the new suspension. Enjoy!

Thanks B for the great review. We're super happy you're happy.

FYI, Brian said he wanted it as low as possible while retaining driveability. So that's what we did. Basically allowed for him to be able to turn the wheels without hitting the fender.
