SSR comps

rishie, sleepR1, anyone else, are these wheels suitable for the street, or more of a race wheel.

i.e. are they strong enough for the street. TIA

A lot of people have had "pot hole" problems. Contrary to popular beleife, many people thinking these whels are strong, they get their wieght from being so light.

I use my SSR Comps for open-track duty only. Mine are 8.5 and 9.5 x 17 with 245/45- and 275/40- seventeen-inch Hoosier R3S03s. The tire sidewalls are very STIFF, and I tend to run over FIA curbing A LOT. This kind of impact must be different than running over a chuckhole, as evidenced by the rim pics from the Miata forum! FWIW, my rim lips are still straight.

Sk8world uses his Comps on the road, so he'll have to chime in on the Comps usability on public roads.

FWIW, I use 9 x 17, SSR Integral A2s with 255/40-17 Yokohama AVS Intermediates, and DO run over chuckholes quite often (here in central Indiana). The SSR IA2s are still straight, so I can only presume the weight difference between the two SSR wheels (15-16 lbs for the 17-inch Comps and 19 lbs for the 17-inch IA2s) has much to do with the strength of the wheel!

There's no free lunch, apparently...if you want lightweight for racing purposes, go with the Comps. If you want strength for public road use, go with the Integral A2s!

SSR Comps

Yeah, I have a set on my FD that is mainly on the street but not more than 4-8 times a month! I have had no problems on the road. I ahve hit a few big bumps also. My struts are always keep on stiff too. But maybe I am just lucky!! I know were the bads roads are and avoid them but I think anyone would with any nice looking wheel.

Damn, Sk8--my car ALMOST looks as good as your car, save for the racing numbers, center-caps, and decals on my Comps

sk8 and jimmyjimbojet

Well thanks! I priced it to go, but have had only a few bites. I've pretty much resigned in keeping my FD. It has 100,200 miles now and climbing--I driver her daily you know Also have two more track events planned (running on plastic now) Road America and perhaps another Putnam Park event. I figure the Hoosiers will be toast by then, and might mount some new road rubber on the Comps during the winter--I'm thinking 235/45-17 and 265/40-17 Bridgestone Potenza S-03s

I have no pics of the IA2s, but they were a great deal when they were available from the Tire Rack at $289 each for a 9 x 17, 42-mm offset wheel!!!!
