Slop in 1985 Steering

Driving my 85 RX-7 is like one of those video race car games. There is about 2-3" of slop as I drive on straightaway. When turning a corner, it tracks well, but minor adjustments, I have to overcome the slop. Road feel in the "slop zone" is non-existant.

The shop says there is nothing wrong - after replacing the control arm, tightening wheel bearings, atc. But there is - this is a sports car and should have tight road feel. Any suggestions how I can determine the problem? My guess is that it is the steering box.
