To Roll or Not To Roll?

To Roll or Not To Roll?

I'm having a custom set of wheels made and just wanted some thoughts as to what you might do if you had the chance? Mainly talking about offsets. Wheels will be 18x9/10. With a 20+ year old car, the chances of doing damage to the paint is definitely high. If you had the choice, would you still try to roll and do more aggressive offsets or would you stick with something safer? Using a visual calculator, I noticed that even with a more aggressive offset, the wheel face/amount of lip doesn't change by huge amounts when going from a +45 to a +18.

What I have done on my old RXs 1987 TII and 1993 R1 when rolling fenders is to score the paint at the edge of the fender with a hobby knife first.

This way when the paint cracks away from the metal it cracks up to the score line and stops before cracking into the outwardly visible portion of the fender. Then use crazy glue under the edge of the score line and touch up paint on the metal on the fender lip where the paint flaked off.

Do the usual precautions of heat-gun and going slowly as well. On the FD make sure you remove the front fenders' upper two fender liner bolts and if you are doing any kind of pull at all with the fender lip roll cut the mounting tabs off the metal fender as well so you have a continuous width/strength lip to roll.

Front fenders can be replaced and limit fitment more than rear anyways, so it is less stressful to do just the fronts at first.

Thanks for the info. Paint cracking of any kind will bother me since you'd have to seal it up perfectly to make sure there were no ill effects down the road if it indeed cracked.
