This road noise is driving me insane

my car sounds like it has mud tires on it from the inside. At 30 mph the road noise starts (sounds like WOOWOOWOOOOWOWOWOWOOWOW) and it gets worse and worse until at highway speeds you have to yell to talk to the passenger.

Yoko AVS 100 Tires
Stock Suspension, bushings, everything.

what the heck could it be?

Most likely tires. Particularly if they are worn. When picking new ones, read the tests on TireRack.com -- they often have ratings for road noise among the tires in the test.

they are 8 months old and ive been rotating them. I believe is started happening when I replaced the tires actually, I could be wrong though, I dont remember.

Are there any bushings that would transfer road noise when they are done?

I don't think its the wheel bearings because when I did the swerve test to see which side it was coming from the noise wouldn't get louder or softer on either side.

the tread is uneven on the tires.

or u put one tire on in the wrong direction? ? ?

does your car pull to the right or left? and did it pull before your new tires?

all the tires were replaced at the same time and I believe they are facing the right direction, I will check that though. It doesn't pull either way now or before.

when was the last time you had an alignment done? same thing happened to me once and it turns out that the morons who did my alignment had too much toe-in on the front and the inner edge of my tires got worn in a really weird way that made it sound like a bearing was going.

betcha that is your problem.

OK, anyone around radford, VA want to swap tires so I can test if its the tires or my alignment, which was done by a mazda dealership about 4k miles ago when I got the tires.

Yes all the tires are going the right direction.

ES100's?
You can get an idea of what kinda road noise the tires are going to produce by looking at the tread pattern.
Is the pattern symmertical?
If so, this will cause harmonics.
B.F. Goodrich used a tread pattern with "changing pitch" on their old Comp T/A's a long time ago.
By changing the (outer) tread block size, this minimized harmonics.
I think the old Bridgestone RE-71 was like this also.

Dont go getting your feelings hurt El Nene 7. But come on, a statement out of the blue that is not backed up with any facts what so ever but rather a "bro" is not going to gain you any recognition for a valid helpful response.

If you want to make a helpful response, you could start with saying what other symptoms the car was having when your diff was going out. Or any other good hard facts.

Ted: Sure the tires could be some of it, but I do no think that they are all of the problem. Why would a street tire be so loud that you have to yell to your passenger at any speeds over 45. I don't think those would be on the market very long.

I am going to get my alignment checked out one of these days to see if that is the issue. I really would like to meet up with someone and swap wheels for a bit to determine if my wheels are the problem.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

I had Pirelli 6000 (fleet car tyres) on my Turbo II
I replace them with 225x16x50 Yokohama AVS Sport and on teh way home I actually stopped on the motorway (freeway) 'cos I though I had a puncture or 4!

After 4000miles either I've become used to it or they've got quieter

chipped gears on a differential can indeed cause a repeatative whine that would vary with speed. so can the transmission.

Could easily be the tires. Seen it happen on more than a few cars. If its comming more from the front or back, then swap the tires front to back and see if the noise goes with it.

If its from "everywhere" you can turn the tires around to rotate the wrong direction just to see if the noise changes.

If it changes with the tire change then bingo.... if not...keep searching. Just my .02 and backwoods engineering.

Ok, I just put on brand new P-Zero M and S's which supposedly make little to no road noise and it did not make one difference. Still the same noise... what next? Toe links, trailing arms, pillowballs, differential bushings, differential?
