R1 or something else?
I have a 93 touring FD and want to upgrade the suspension. Should I convert it to an R1 or go for something completely different? Is the R1 suspension all that much better?

What are you planning to do with your car? Drag race? Road Race? Just normal street driving? Depending on your application, suspension suggestions will vary.

The only difference between suspensions for 93 was that the R1's had stiffer shocks. Springs, bushings, and roll bars were identical.
For 94-95, the rear bar on non R2 models was smaller and the bushings were softer.
A very good upgrade for you would be Koni shocks. At their softest setting, their valving is very close to the R1 shocks. You can then stiffen them up for track use.
Given the problems I'm having right now with my aftermarket springs, I wouldn't go that route if I had it to do all over again. I would just upgrade the shocks and then go to full aftermarket coil-overs later if you track the car regularly.
