Question about used Konis

I just picked up a used set of Koni Yellows. I think I read that they are a low gas pressure shock. So my question is, will the gas pressure normally push the inner rod out all the way if nothing holds it in? Mine don't although they feel and look fine otherwise. I had some Illuminas on a different car and they would do that. Just wondering if these Konis have lost their charge or if that's normal. Thanks!

Hmm. Every set of Konis I've ever used had positive pressure on the shock shafts (i.e. would re-extend after compression). How many miles on the used set? Sounds like they may be worn out, or less likely they were 'de-gassed'. You can have them rebuilt by Truechoice for about $125 per IIRC. Probably cheaper to buy a fresh set and sell the used ones to a racer who plans to rebuild/revalve them anyway.

They do have a little bit of pressure in them, the shafts will slowly push out on their own. Maybe they're fine. The illuminas I got new and the shaft would push out much faster, but that could be a difference in design and pressure. The Koni's have harder rebound I think. The guy I got them from said they had about 19K on then, but who knows?! They even came with all the rubber mounts which are in good condition. Guess I'll just have to install them and see!

Try adjusting them to the softest rebound setting (fully clockwise) and see if they rebound faster. They may just be cranked all the way down to full stiff.

I did that. They do extend, just slower than I expected. Although it is almost freezing in my unheated garage which may be a factor. Only real issue may be that one of the front ones is really hard to push in, quite different than the other. So I may have to scrap the fronts and get some new ones.

A co-worker's koni shock shaft return slow too and her shocks is around 20000s old. We though that they were blown but when we dyno the shock it was within spec. If you question their condition you can sent them to a shop to have them dyno.

Yea, I'm trying to locate a shock dyno locally. I found one not too far away. That way I'll know what's what. Thanks!
