pillowball question

hey guys... i just got these used jic coilovers. and i was inspecting the tops mounts. and in my experience, the top shock nut is always well installed so that the threads portion of the top goes all the way through the nut. so, these are my first set of pillowballs, and when i compare them to the back coilovers, the fronts nut is barely on there. normally i would just say that the nut wasnt installed all the way, and id zip it down snug. but then i compare the location of the sholders on the shaft of the struts, as in the pics. i lined them up visually even, the fronts and rears, and i can assume where the threads should be. on the pillowballs, the top nut is obviously sitting higher.

so i guess the nut looks as if its not on there all the way but i dont see any room for the pillowball assy to move down the shaft because of the shoulder. and there are no rubber parts.

my question is: is this normal on pillowballs?

my overwhelming urge for self-preservation tells me that the nut barely being threaded on there is not a good idea for abusive driving.

I wouldn't drive on the looser one AT ALL. Much better to take the shock back in your DD.

this top nut has a "crown" on it. it looks like the back one with the nylon locking portion. but there is no nylon part that i can see and it almost looks like this crown is supposed to be facing down like it is. the upper part of the pillowball looks as if it uses this crown acts as a socket to pivot in. anyone else experience this?

ok i think i figured it out. this top nut has more to it than you can see. i did some searching for pillowballs in this forum. and i see that there is some type of shoulder on this nut and crown. a thinner diameter sleeve, if you will, that is sunken throught the ball part of the adjuster. see my pics. any thoughts on this. this makes sense though. from the looks of it, there is a good inch that threads on that sinks through the ball portion.

i highlighted the nut in yellow, and the shouldered sleeve in red.
