Overall tire height

Noob question here, but according to the FD wheel and tire sizing guide, stock overall tire height is 24.85 inches. With 18x10 inch rims the over all height would be 24.49 inches assuming I followed the guide. Why is it then that when I look at pictures of FD's with 18's the wheels take up so much more space in the wheel well? It doesn't seem like the tires have anymore than a 30 profile, even so with a profile that differed by 5 or so, the overall height would not be that much different. Help me to understand Thanks!

You're probably seeing that the cars with 18s are also lowered.
