Wink Need A Good Street Tire For My FD

Hi, I need to get a set of tires for my FD and i am on stock rims. I will be putting down around 500rwhp when i get it back in the next week and really need a good tire for dry and wet and great grip for back roads(gota keep my foot of the pedal). I am not sure if i should stay with the 225 50 and get either Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec or Falken 615's or go with 245 45's and get something else but i have not found a good tire yet for those. Money is not really an issue but not going to pay more than $180 per tire unless they are really good. Thanks

For stock FD rims, run 245/40/16 (double check the aspect ratio).

How will you be using your car? Street, autox, track days? How much of each?

The Star Specs are a great tire. I started running them recently. The 615s are pretty gripping but get greasy. Think about the new Kumho XS also.

Do a search in this forum on tires and you'll get lots of thread with info on those tires.

tirerack.com has a good 'search engine' that allows you to pick the type of tire you want (hi-performance, wet/dry, etc.)

Its mainly going to see street but agressive street driving and little track time probably not though. I have looked on tire rack ect but they dont carry falken and looking for rx7 owner perspective. I did a search and got lost but mainly wondering about the size since the 615 and the super star only come in a 225 and i will be putting down about 500rwhp. So i was thinking the 245 might help but my tire choice is limited but alot of the 225's are the size of the 245. Might just have to buy rims. But with 320rwhp i was spinning 1st and 2nd on 225s so with 500rwhp i think i needed to move up.

Don't know any sizes off by hand but the BFG KDW G-Force and 615 AZenis has worked great for me.

But if you are going to be running 500whp, you are going to need at least 275 for traction.

Yea looks like i might go with the 615s since they seem like the most bang for the buck. I just will have to keep off the gas and low boost but i gota break it in first anyway.

A little on the pricey side, but i've heard from several people that their worth the money. Their about as close to R-compounds are your going to get while still being a street tire.

Go to tirerack NOW.

RE-01Rs in FD size for $77 ea. Can't beat that with an intake elbow.

I did and went to shipping and they are gone. What now? My real question is should i stay with the 225 or go with a 245? Seems like better tires are made in the 225 but will i benefit more from having the extra width? Or should i got with the falken 615 since i heard it is the size of a normal 245? My friend keeps tellin me to go with the 615's.

They both have to fit on the same 8" rim so the 225 gets stretched a bit wider and the 245 gets stretched a bit narrower. In theory the 245 is slightly better but in all practicality your contact patch will be nearly the same in the end.

In my opinion - get the best tire in your price range in a 245. Take a look at the Hankook Ventus RS2. Lots of good reviews of that tire on bimmerforums. I don't know anything about the 615s so you'll have to decide that for yourself.

Also take a look at the classifieds here for a used set of bigger rims and tires.

Wish i could but PFS took all my moneys i saw that set of fiske's fritz has. I spent way too much, way too much on the build. I got about $400 for a good set of tires. And working on my suspension setup since it handles like a turd right now(my 88 with 108k on stock sus. handled better). Got a set of 30k struts with eibachs on them real cheap and need to redo all the bushings but i just want to enjoy the car since its been since early august since i drove it and then i only had it for 3 months because it was being rebuilt from febuary to late may.

I am also building a FC(im building this) lol thats where alot of my money went too.

Star specs are better than the 615's by a longshot...

And can't we whip up some type of a sticky in regards to tire selection? There seems to be a new thread in regards to tire selection every week!

Keep in mind the Dunlop Star Specs are V rated in the 225/50 size, not so good.

Why not the Kumho MX? They're good tires, and within your price range.

^Havent looked into the Kum-ho's might need to take a look. I wasnt going to say anything about the speed rating but i did notice that. I am just staying away from hancok since i have some club tires made by them(previous owner) and they suck wet dry anywhere, my bald bridgestone turenza's on my 88 hooked up better.

Keep in mind you can't really judge a brand of tire based on one experience with one of their tire lines......I would never consider running the old horrible Kumho 711s and 712s but the MX and new SX have gotten good feedback.

I love spending time on the tirerack doing research, I'm probably going with Michelin PS2s for my next set of tires based on my hours spent on that site....

I also just noticed the tire rack only has 2 left, they're phasing the MX out b/c of the new SX.

Just be careful driving in the rain on worn tires, many years ago a friend wrecked his CYM trying to nurse some tires on it......

"I need to get a set of tires for my FD and i am on stock rims. I will be putting down around 500rwhp "

stock rims and 500 rwhp?

you are kidding, right? think i am kidding?

no.

w stock rims and 500 maybe part of 4th gear will be useable.

you need 9 inch rims in front and 10 inch minimum in the rear.

255 fr and 285/295 rear.

as far as dual purpose tires, i love my Sumitumo HTR ZIII but they aren't made in 16s.

I think he is serious about the stock rims.

I think he is dreaming about the 500 rwhp.

Stockers = The Champion

These were exactly my thoughts as well.

If you really want to "use" 500hp on the street, seriously consider moving away from "stockers" and to a new set of wheels that will support more tire sizing.

Wheels are expensive, but if you do plan on tracking the car you could consider keeping the stockers and running some racing rubber on them for your specific application.

Na i not kidding kinda on a budget after a 14k build(brand new engine torn down street ported and balanced with atkins cryo'd seals, Borg warner turbo, FMIC, twin power, and a bunch of other crap. Somebody just put down 503 with the same setup on pump so with aux i will be above but i only have the stock wheels for now.

Just want something that i can use on the street for back roads you know the usally weekend driving in a 7. I want to wait untill i can afford the ones i want. I just like the stock wheels since they are light and what im working with gota make something work but like i said i gota break it in so that gives me time.

And i wont be using the 500 on the street unless i have the right tire combo and try to keep it on the track anyway since everyone alradys knows the 7 cant lose.
