I love the lapping day for how "friendly" they are. Totally streetable if need be, don't tear up your rotors, and work cold and hot (a wide usable temp range).
That last one is really important to me, because with more aggressive pads like PFC 93's, I had trouble keeping them hot enough. They're fine if you're making repeated super hard stops, but I found that, if I needed to use a little more finesse, scrub off just a little speed, or get caught behind a train (or it's just cold/rainy out) and they cool off, they start squealing, tearing up the rotors, wearing quickly, and become rough and brake poorly.
About the only thing the lapping days lack is ultimate braking power. They just don't stop you like the hand of God that is a PFC 93.
If the competitions retained most/all of the friendliness, but with more power, they would indeed be awesome.

Odd... but I would add the "for a track pad" to all of the qualities I mentioned.
I will say that they stop VERY well cold though. I really like how they never give me the "oh ****" feeling on the first corner or two, and are very forgiving with less than threshold braking.
By way of comparison, if you drive more than 1/8 mile on the street with hawk blues, your rotors look like dog meat... likewise, I ran through a set of PFC 93's after a total of four days on track. Right to the backing plate. I think it was mostly due to how quickly they wear when cold. two of those days were cold/rainy, and I had a 1/2 hour drive to and from WGI... that and they squealed and pulsated badly unless I was braking down full-tilt from a buck forty five. Oh yeah, and the brand new set of rotors were cracked to the shouldnt-be-used point after bout three of those days.
I've resigned to just use the lapping days and accepting less braking if my alternatives are that kind of hassle. FWIW, when pairing the lapping days with PFC 90 rears, the rears never even got hot enough... rear rotor still looked rough. I swapped in a set of Axxis street rears, and it ran fine! talk about low hassle, you don't even need to swap in rear pads with the lapping days!

I guess I don't see them as streetable at all aside from not tearing up the rotors when cold. They don't grab worth a darn when cold for me. I drive them to the track and they never get warmed up enough on the street. I'll need to take a look and see if I don't have the Competitions instead, but I'm fairly sure they are the Lapping Day's.

I think I'll order the N-Tech Competition pads next time from Nick to see how the differences are between them and the Lapping Day pads (and to figure out which pad I currently have for sure).

Mahjik, I'll look at the pad numbers from the N-tech comp pads tonight and post them. FWIW, I used Hawk HP+ in the the rear. This was by far the bast setup I have used.

Pat, how was the cold/street/light braking behavior?
Are you using stock brakes? I'm using the lapping days w/ StopTechs.

In the cold they squeal like crazy, but still have great stopping power it's almost scary the amount of bite they have. I'm using the stock system w/ a 929 booster.

I also had an excellent experience with Nick's comp pads at VIR. Though I REALLY wanted PF01 for my fronts, the $430+ price tag for Brembo made me a little "flexible." Nick assured me that I wouldn't be dissatisfied, especially in lieu of the price. Needless to say, again I was delighted.

So street pads on 99+ rear brakes are fine at the track? I know you are faster than me, so if it works for you....but I can tell you I'm done running street/track pads at the track up front.

I still have OE rear brakes and MC. In fact, my rears are the ORIGINAL factory rotor w/ 95k on 'em!!
Yup, Nick had StopTech shapes. A couple notes though:
It looks like the backing plate was machined down on the sides, and the very tip 1/8" of the pad overhangs the rotor, so a ridge stays on the outside. Worth noting because it will create the illusion that you have more pad left than you actually do... and that the pad shape probably wasn't the exact one. The still work and instal just fine though... and yes, they wer MUCH cheaper than PFCs.
I woiuldn't assume i'm any faster than you are, but I tried running the stock AXXIS ultimate pads up front on my first day out at summit point with these brakes last year, and that definately wasn't happening... I just backed out on the straight so that i wouldn't be braking down from much more than 120, and not at the threshold... I left alot of room. I also had a bit of a soft pedal that I sourced to not having put new fluid in during the install. Fresh AP 600 cured that.
Subsequent events at WGI and VIR with Nicks pads and fresh fluid proved perfectly adequate.

Thanks for the info Ptrhahn! I will definitely give Ntech's a try. Just to confirm, you are using the "Lapping Day" compound vs the "Competition" compound, or are these the same thing? I know, I should just give Nick a call.
I know you're faster than me -- you have (well, had! ) more power, you run R-compound tires, and more importantly, it sounds like you have more track experience than I do. Your local tracks seem to be quite a bit faster than most of the tracks here as well. In any case, if the brakes are holding up for you, I'm quite sure they will work for me. Thanks again.
