max spring rate for koni yellows

i was curious what the max spring rate a koni yellow can handle before the shock would become useless and need to be revalved. this isnt for my rx7(which is why im sure this will get moved) but is for my honda hatch. its a general question about suspension so if it could stay it would be apreciated. something die hard drivers need to know anyways. i heard somewhere in the ball park of 600(spring rate). is this correct or close?

That would be a Koni question, different models are all valved differently. I would give True Choice a call and get their thoughts. 1-800-388-8783

I talked to Ground Control about this with respect to their coilover kits. The thing that you want to keep in mind is that there is a optimal range for the shock to work within. Too little spring, and you've underdamped your shock. Too much spring, and you've overdamped your shock. Ideally, you want to be critically damped ... but that's very hard to achieve. That said, the GC tech said he thought 300 lbs/in is too soft and may cause coil bind; and that anything over 600 lbs/in would be going beyond teeth-rattling. The off-the-shelf Koni Sport (Yellows) are still useable into the 700 lbs/in range, but you ought to be thinking about re-valving/true coilovers by the time you get into that high of a spring rate.

I'd advertise trying out something like 600/450 for performance driving. For a toned down ride quality, maybe something like 450/350. And y'know, ride quality is already compromised with the Koni Yellows anyway.....

But is all that true for the Honda he is asking about? Me thinks not.

You know there is no advertising allowed without paying the forum. That will be $19.95; or you can get banned. Your choice

Ah, missed that part about the Honda. Then again, a Honda with those stiff spring rates would handle like mad.

Oh gee, thanks. I'll be sure to keep my Roget's Thesaurus around the next time I post on the forum.

those do sound like rx7 spring rates. we are in the process of doing the impossible, but possible if you will. we are swapping an h22a(prelude motor) into an EG(93VX hatch) chassis. many said that the extra 70lbs that the motor and tranny combo make over the beloved B series makes it impossible to turn. i dont think that this is the case. i just think people dont know how to tune their suspensions. im looking at a JDM rear 23mm sway bar, 450-500(fronts) 600-650(rears), energy suspension bushings, lower rear tie rod, etc...i did a crx back in the day and it came out like a champ. the prelude will definately be a challenge, but what the heck. if it can be tuned right then the TQ the motor creates when exiting a corner will be well worth it.
