Lack of grip issues

Hi Guys,

I have a FD, just over 300 rwhp, 18" by 8" wheels, 255's on the rear and 225's on the front. There rather good quality tyres too.

I just cant get any grip!!!!!! I cant get any better then 2.9 60' times. Its not too bad around twisty roads but I just cant put the power down in a straight line all the way through 3rd. I am looking to sell my wheels and get get a new set. Im want good grip on the circuit first and formost but would like to be able to get the power down in a straight line.

I am thinking of going for some 17" 9" front and 9.5 or 10" rears.

Does this sound like a issue with big wheels, low profile tryes and am I thinking along the correct lines to fix this?

I know that a bit of suspention adjustment (I have coilovers) could help but its set up to corner and does this very well. By the way I would like all these results on street tyres. I have some standard rims that are getting dressed in semi slicks in the near future for circuit racing.

Tires used for grip driving are not good for drag racing. Ever hear the saying "Jack of all traits, but master of none"? You'll either need to keep a different set of rear wheels/tire for your drag racing, or just pick the side you really care about and get tires for that.

Ill try and dig out my wheel alignment sheet when I get home.

yeah I know its always going to be a compromise.

I would like to find a middle ground for the street. For serious track work Ill be using standard wheels and semi slicks and probably slicks on the rear for drags but I would like to be able to put down a semi decent time on street tryes.

Surly 300 rwhp should be good from more then a high 13 and almost 3 sec 60' times on street tyres??

Maybe its your driving...

But seriously, what street tires do you have? All street tires are not created equal.

Funny you should say that....from a history of high powered 4wd cars there is a bit of improvment to be made here!!!

Im using Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres.....not to bad usually.

Try something like the Falken 615's.

I just found my alignment specs and currently have 1deg negitive camber on the rear.

I think most of it will be in the suspention.

I have dick all squat and rather hard damper setting.
If I set the reas to 0deg camber and soften up the dampers I should get some results.

How much will big wheels and rather high trye presures impact grip?

A larger softer side wall will help with grip, higher tire pressure will decrease off the line grip.

Why are you messing around with street tires? Just get some radials for drag racing and be done with it, then you will have the grip you want.
