labor too much??

i went to this generic shop thats pretty decent, but its still a hole in the wall place that isnt even close to a performance shop(theres nothing really good around where i live) and i asked what it would cost to remove the wheels and take off the calipers and to remount them later(im going to paint them) and they said $225, is that crazy or does it actually take 3 hrs of labor to take off calipers?

For an R&R, that sounds about right if they include bleeding the brakes on the reinstall.

Why are you bothering to take off the calipers if you're just painting them? Duplicolor has a nice kit that you can get at Pep Boys. It has everything you will need and like I said before, don't need to remove calipers (disconnect from brake line). If you were powder coating, different story.

im intrested in spraying them, powdercoating calipers isnt the greatest idea because it could damage the rubbers and stuff. i want to do the VHT stuff because it looks the best when you can spray the entire thing and clear coat it. i know the duplicolor looks decent but i want to do a thorough job

You can spray them while they are installed. You won't get the side towards the engine bay of the caliper but who cares! You'll never see that side while it's installed anyway!

Here's when I did mine a few years ago:
