Just bought some Works! Now about tires...?

Hey guys,

I just bought a set of Work Equips from RBwheels.

17x8 +35mm front
17x9 +35mm rears

I am wanting to know what size tires I should run to not rub and not get a huge stretch. I also don't want it to look like a Honda from the side either meaning the front sidewall is a lot taller than the rear. Here are the sizes I've been told to run but am undecided as I've researched and found different outcomes.

1st recommendations:

225/45/17 fronts
245/40/17 rears

*I've seen pics and the rears looked a little stretched and the fronts didn't

2nd recommendation:

235/45/17 fronts
255/40/17 rears

I've just been told it works by some and others it'll be like balloons. lol.

I am running Bilstein Coilovers and my car is pretty much slammed w/ rolled fenders in the front and nothing done to the rears. Anyhow... If you guys don't mind posting up your thoughts that would be awesome! I can't wait to get some tires mounted up on my wheels. They are always what I've wanted for my FC's and now I have a pretty dope set!

Thanks for looking!

-Allen G.

i say 235/40 and 255/40
dont go 45 in front.. theres nothing wrong with a slightly shorter front tire. mine have a 1 inch difference in diameter, and i think it looks lovely.

245 on a 9 is best for longevity and overall good performance.

Care to expound on this big chief ? Here on the east coast a 255/40 works pretty well on a 17x9

Depends on tire brand too.

245 Direzza Star spec run wide, almost a 255 on another brand. You can always go wider, but are you actually using the width? Chances are if someone is not using the full contact patch of a 245, they aren't doing too much better with a 255. Most people don't bother checking.

Because it's always a compromise on street cars vs performance and aesthetics. It's never 100 percent optimized for 1 or the other.

I am just sharing my personal experience, because i like my car to have a little slip. Too much tire in the front, and the car will understeer. Bigger is not always better.

So, I have 245s on all 4 corners, but then again, my car is 4wd and I have certain look in mind as well.

And even then, I am only using 60 percent of the actual contact patch due to alignment and other issues. For true performance, most people setup the car's chassis and everything else around their desired tire size, not vice versa.

If i had an FD i would probably run 17 x 10/17 x 9 with 265s/245s if i had performance in mind. I know not everyone will agree with me.

^^Sounds similar to my Fikse setup, 17x10/8.5 with 275/245.

yea i agree with the others, for fc's run 235 40's sidewalls front, 45 looks too thick for the fronts imo.

here i have 255/40/17 rears and 235/45/17 fronts, dosnt look right, but it'll probably look perfect on an FD

well then I'm sold... they will be on an FC and I really like the 235/40/17's front and 255/40/17 rears. That's what I'm going to get this Thursday in BF Goodrich G-Force sports.

You'd be much better off going with the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs, they are infinitely superior to the BFG. You're spending about $75 more for the set, but they're worth every penny

Jimminy Christmas those look pretty! Depending on if this guy buys my Ronals then I'll try those Direzza's out. From the looks they look like they'll bite exactly how I like in the mountains!

225/45 are the exact same sidewall height as 255/40. That'd be my vote for your wheel size.

Yes but STAR SPECS Ftw!!!!! It's all about the Star Specs, don't get fooled into the Z101's. They are not the same.

Just know that with great friction comes not so great tread life. It's worth it if you can afford it.

I concur that the Z1's are wider than their adversary.

I have a buddy with 17x9.5's with Z1's on his STI. When he changed from neova to z1 we had to pull his fender just a tad more.

225/45 or 235/40/17 doesn't matter. i've done both setups.
255/40/17

Since you have coilovers the 235/40 would probably be the way to go.

****CHECK BACKSPACING AT THE TIRES O.D. EDGE*****

You might need 5mm spacers which should be no problem with stock studs.

I've had some issues with certain coilovers running 8" +35 with 235's on my GTUs. It all comes down to how they designed the attachment plates on the lower bracket/strut body.

Figure I would update... The coilover was rubbing the wheel and tire before lowering it down off the lift when getting tires. Used a 3/8" spacer to give 3mm clearance b/t the wheel and tire both. I'm wanting extended lug studs to account for the spacer but haven't really found any that look trust worthy from reliable sources. Rishie can you get extended lug studs for an FC?

Anywho: 235/40/17 fronts and 255/40/17's rear. I am VERY happy w/ the look and glad I crammed a 235 up front for more contact patch. It's VERY close but I rolled my fenders and it doesn't pull them at all. Fits nicely. But I'm going to have to either trim or remove my fender linings b/c the fronts rub on bumps.

Cell phone picture...
