Installing hawk hps front pads...

im trying to retract the piston back into the caliper as shown here :http://www.rotarypowered.com/howtobrakes.html

In the picture the 2 pistons to the right (farthest from car) went in fine but the ones to the left (closest to the car) wont go in no matter how hard i try. I can tell that the pistons on the right are in more then the ones on the left. WHen all the pistons are fully retracted, are the ones on the left (closest to car) supposed to sit out more then the ones on the right?

All this is bothering me because i can't fit the hawk pads and stock shims in there. When i bought the pads they came with a backing already attached to the pads. I'm supposed to use the stock shims in addition to this, right? Maybe this is my problem because without the stock shims i could probably fit that one pad in there....
thanks

I didn't use the stock shims since the Hawk pads already have a shim on it and it's a snug fit without the stock shims. I went through this experience a few days before the first MSR event.

Both pistons can be pushed in flush with the boot. Just keep working it.

Some of the piston may go in easier than others.
Just keep working it with two screwdrivers or a c-clamp.
You can put the stock pad back in and press the brake pedal (remember to put the brake fluid cap back on). Sometimes, it helps move the piston a bit so you can push it inwards.

Hope it helps,

J

hey thanks for the help.... unfortunatly i kept trying to force the piston back in and it kind of flatted itself out. So basically the piston now sits as high as the rubber boot instead of before when the piston would sit about 2 millimeters higher than the boot. Do you think ill be alright?? Good news is though that since the piston flattened itself out a little bit i was able to squeze the pad and shim in.....

The best trick I've found is to leave the old pad in place, and use the C clamp against that.ususally when the piston won't go in it is because it is not exactly straight in the bore. Using the pad will help prevent this. Also you can drive two pistons in at a time Carl Byck

yeah i used the old pad but instead of using a c-clamp i used a big wrench beween the pad and the old rotor to pry it
