How tall is a 255/50/16 tire?

How tall is a 255/50/16 tire? I know the 255 is the width of the tire in mm. I just dont know how the 2nd number fits in. Is there a formula to tell how tall the tire is. If not can someone also tell me how tall a 245/45/16 is? I tried searching but i have had no luck. thanks guys.

50 means half of the width. So it would be about 127.5mm.

255/50/16

sidewall = 127.5mm x2 (because there is sidewall on either side of the wheel)

so

255mm = ~11in

so

11in + 16in = 27 inches tall, from top of tire to bottom of tire. give or take a couple of metric->imperial fuckups.

edit: corrected a known metric->imperial fuckup

the first # is the width in mm. then the 2nd # is % of the width is the sidewall. and the last # is the rim size in inches. example 255/50/16 width is 255 sidewall is 50% of 255 and 16 inches is the rim size
