Happy New Year everyone!
Calendars
On our Gregorian calendar (named after Catholic Pope Gregory), it is the year 2002 AD (anno Domini--Ecclestical Latin for the year of our Lord Jesus Christ). Interestingly the Gregorian calendar has only been in place since 1582. Prior to that year, everyone used a lunar calendar (quite inaccurate). Pope Gregory rounded up the premier astronomers of the time, and demanded that these brains figure out a better calendar. The brains came up with our solar calendar. Accurate to within 1 day every 4 years (leap year). The most accurate of existing calendars. This is why the Catholic Gregorian calendar is used as the global standard.
Other calendars in use?
In the Hebrew calendar it's still the year, 5762. The Jewish new year is celebrated on Sep 7 Gregorian date, the new year 5763. The Jewish based their calendar on when the world was created by God. They have 7 days in a week, with the last day day of the week ending on the Sabbath, which is the Gregorian Saturday.
In the Chinese calendar it's still the year 4699. Their new year doesn't turn over until the Gregorian date, Feb 12. This will be the year, 4700--the year of the Horse (my year, as I was born in Gregorian '66). The Chinese base their calendar on the first Emperor who ordered to keep track of the days! They use a lunar calendar with 12 lunar months. They have a 12-year cycle.
Finally there's the Islamic calendar. For them it's still the year 1422. Their new year doesn't turn over until our Gregorian date, Mar 15, when it becomes 1423. They base their calendar from when the prophet, Muhammad left Mecca to go to Medina.
