Guard Plates?

What exactly is the purpose of the guard plates on the caliper? Is it just a spacer between the steering knuckle and caliper? I failed to remove them from my old caliper, and retuned it as a core. I can't find any place that sells them, so can I just make some?

I have no idea as to their purpose either. I didn't re-install mine either. Maybe they were to avoid the aluminum to aluminum contact as a preventative corrosion effort, maybe...later

It's to keep the caliper and upright from fretting against eachother.

Fretting corrosion:

Fretting corrosion is corrosion that can occur on the load bearing contact surface between mating material. It is caused by the combination of corrosion and the abrasive effects of corrosion product debris often seen in equipment with moving or vibrating parts. Other problems induced by fretting corrosion include: surface pitting. seizing and galling of mating surfaces. reduced fatigue life as a result of stress concentrations produced on the metal surface.

I would replace those plates soon.

I see, I see. Guess I'll put something back in there, having enough troubles getting things apart as it is, I don't want to make it harder next time...later
