I sent the calipers in for refurbishment and fancy painting.

I didn't tell the company that I was having brake issues but shortly after receiving the calipers yesterday, taking them apart and inspecting everything including the pistons, the shop got in touch with me. They said that the pistons were fine but on each front caliper two pistons were sticking as they were dry and some of the fluid seal rubber had also stuck to the pistons. After a full cleanse and rebuild with new seals and grease the calipers should be good to go.

So, let's hope that the calipers were in fact the reason for my braking issues and I don't need to fork out big money on new brakes so soon!

That is good info. Always helpful to know what you are starting with before throwing money at a problem. Go ahead and re-use the pads and rotors and see how it goes. Maybe resurface the rotors to get rid of any high/low spots.
