FD brake pad experience
Use to run stock pads up until about 1996, then went to Porterfields. They were better than stock but not great.
In 1997, I changed to Brembo cross drilled discs which helped, and in 2000 to EBC greens, old formular. They worked great except left a little material on the disc faces after really hard breaking. Looked like smearded burnt stuff, and like there was a little floating. It would wear off in a few days. When the pads were worn out, I took the discs to a good shop. This was 2002. They could not resurface the front discs due to super tempered hard spots on the disc faces. There weren't any cracks in the cross drilled Brembos, good design.
Replaced all four discs with new stock Mazdas. This time I went with Hawk HP+ . Very good but seemed to have a little less high speed grab than the EBC greens. So two months ago I cleaned and preped the discs before installing the new formular EBC greens. What can I say, they suck! Even after a good breaking in period. High speed braking was terrible.
Recleaned the discs and reinstalled the HP+. Immediate
improvement to as they were before the switch.
The new formular can't compare to the old in my experince.
Anyone else with similar experience?

Thanks for sharing this info. I switched from stock to HPS and I am very happy with it. I've heard HP+ dust more but should do better in street racing.
I guess drilled rotor helped braking performance but couldn't be turned. I'm fine with my stock discs.

As far as the EBC Greens, I have run other people's cars using the Greenstuff and I have the same impression .... they stink. Hence why I have never put them on my car. I stick with the HP+'s because of their cold bite, and I've found they come back fairly quickly after first fading them. The dust is a little aggravating at times ... but overall, I can't complain. Great performance for a very reasonable price.
Apparently the recent Porterfields are all the rave. Perhaps it's time to give them a try again?
I've had a very different experience from Chuck with regard to the Porterfields and EBCs. I have the Type RS calipers and rotors fr/rr. I use the Porterfield R4Es to great effect for extended lapping sessions (25 minute sessions). The Type RS Sumitomos and EBC Greenstuffs perform very similarly on street and track. Both dust minimally on the street, and do very well on the high speed track. Lapping sessions are limited 20 minutes of hard driving (9/10ths) with the Greenstuffs and Sumitomo Type RS pads. These are great match for a high performance street tires used on track. If using Porterfield R4Es, Hoosier R3S03 tires are a better match for R4E pads.
I am very happy with the Hawk HPS pads.
I only autocross/street drive the car, and they are a vast improvement over stock, and more than suffice for my needs. They make a little bit more dust than the stock pads, but are more consistent, and less prone to fade than stock.
