Dayton Daytona RKs vs Potenza RE730s vs Sumitomo HTR+

I've never heard of Daytona RZs...but Firestone recommended them ( ya..right ) and said they were a good tire.

They also offered the Potenza RE730s..

I looked around at Tirerack.com, and I really like the sound of the Sumitomo HTR+s...

I live in Tacoma WA, and rains like a beotch up here..and it's getting close to the snow season. I need a modestly priced tire that still performs.

Any suggestions? And has anyone here used Tirerack.com..is it cheaper in the long run?

I'm saving up for the suspension and bushings, but don't mind paying a bit more for tires since they're so important (I don't plan on racing anytime soon, the car needs too much work first).

What should I go with? I'd have to order the Sumitomos from Tirerack.

And yes..I did do a search on the tires...I found the Potenzas were alright but they have alot of road noise, and aren't very impressive once they get a few miles on them.

The Sumitomos are the ones I want..but noone has them in stock.

The Dayton Daytonas don't have any info on this site, as to peoples opinions.

Has anyone ever used them before?

If you are daily driving the car in the rain, you should really spring for some Bridgestone S-03s or Dunlop SP 9000s. Not only will these tires have better dry grip than any of the tires you are considering, they will have better wet handling as well. If you are really trying to pinch some pennies, I like the Dunlop SP 8000s as a less expensive tire. SleepR1 prefers the Yokohama AVS Intermediates, which are on clearance at Tire Rack.

And yes it is almost impossible to beat tire rack's prices and customer service.

BTW, when you mentioned snow, are you actually considering driving your FD in the snow? If you are, which I think is a really bad idea, you will need to get dedicated snow tires. All-season tires suck ***, period. Get some Pirelli 210s, Dunlop M2, or Bridgestone LM-22 if you are going to be doing snow driving.

rynberg...how long has it been since you've left IN? Must be nice on the left coast...I drive my FD four seasons per year...never used snow tires....I figure that's what the driver schools were for

Penny Pinching...

For $94 each in 255/40-17, the Yokohama AVS Intermediates from Tire Rack are a steal in anyone's book. They're decent in the rain at full tread depth. The AVS I's are very soft and wear out quickly. I bought 5 brand new in Feb, and I'll probably need new tires before the first snowfall here in Indy...I may take rynberg's suggestion and go with Bridgestone Potenza S-03s...although, those Continental Sport Contact 2s look pretty good in 255/40-17...if Contact 2s are good enough for new Porsches, they're probably good enough for my humble little FD... FWIW, I don't recall that the S-03s being original equipment tires on any high end sports car...but I believe a pre-S03 variant came stock on Ferrari 360 Modenas--they were S02As or something (corrections anyone?)

Dayam...I already ordered the Sumitomos.

Oh well..from the huge number of reviews (I really only considered the sports car reviews), it apparently seems to be a nice tire, minimal tread noise, and handles great in the wet which is what I'm primarily concerned about.

Sorry guys, I just couldn't wait, I've GOT to get new tires on the car...the ones on it have no tread at all.

I'll definetly consider your suggestions when I purchase my new rims...I'm really looking hard at the Potenza S-03s..but I had to pinny pinch it this time.

I got the Sumitomos for $88 bucks a piece....so it's a pretty good bargain.

I don't plan to drive in the snow...heh...in fact where I live, this part of Tacoma never gets and if it does, it's snow like for one or two days..and then it's back to rain rain rain. So no..I don't plan to tackle the snow too much. I should have a beater truck by the time the serious winter weather hits.

Thanks guys..

Hehe, it's been 4-1/2 years. I don't miss the snow one bit. I have been back in Michigan/Indiana several times in the winter since then though, so I haven't completely forgotten how to drive in the snow.

Actually, I drove my 79 RX-7 through 4 winters in Indiana/Michigan. That car was a handful. Never went in the ditch though. (It always made me laugh when I passed 4x4s in the ditch )

I almost never buy tires locally anymore. I like the tirerack service. If you are buying tires and wheels too, you are better off because they will come mounted and balanced and all you have to do is mount them on your car.
