That method was shown on "Bill Nye the Science Guy" way back in the day.

It is a fairly accurate method, but you'd have to take into consideration the various sources of error you will encounter, such as tire stiffness, resolution error in the ruler, and etc.

It does help you get an idea of how much each corner of your car weighs though.
It's all physics.
