Bracket from tranny to Diff....What's it for?

We pulled out the motor and tranny from our FD3S today and noticed there is a long bracket that goes all the way from the tranny back to the differential.

The Diff seems to be firmly bolted in place, even without this huge subframe support.

What exactly does this subframe do?

It makes the engine/transmission/diff one solid piece and allows the entire drivetrain to be hung from just four points: the two engine mounts and the two diff mounts. The PPF design is a more efficient structure than other design choices.
