It's the stupidest thing I've heard, EVER. I wish this guy would just throw himself off a cliff.

Question THE BEST FD wheel and tire setup. You gotta see my one of a kind idea!

All you handling guys out there tell me the good and bad points of my future wheel/tire setup(maybe).

Front... Wheels: 18x9.5 or 10
Tires: 275/35/18 Hoosier A3S04's

Rear... Wheels: 17x9.5 or 10
Tires: 275/40/17 Hoosier A3S04's

First of all, I know it will look crazy and stupid, but I think it'll work great. First of all, 18 inch wheels = bigger brakes on the front. Lower profile tires on the front means better steering response and turn in. Also, with the larger profile tire in the back, the transfer from understeer to oversteer will be less sudden and more predictable, not to mention the improved strait line rear traction.

Be honest? You were too lazy to search and didn't put enough thought into your idea! Think you know better than the engineers at Mazda or the track guys here and want to go with an overly wide staggered setup that no one uses and for no good reason? Just go 17x9 all around in the lightest wheel you can find w/255/40 for a good neutral handling setup.

Not a single racing team does this, I think that says it all....

You can easily fit more brakes than you will ever need behind 17-inch wheels.

I personally know of a multi national champion in autox who runs 18" on front and 17" on rear of his ESP Firebird...

...but his car is highly developed and there's more to it than just more sidewall on the rears.

Whenever I finally decide to spend money on street wheels I'll go 17x9 and be done with it.

With 18's in front and 17's in back, I think you would have more understeer than you would want.

Actually in the majority of cases it would be just the opposite.

If you want a lower profile tire on the front then run a lower profile tire on the front. You don't need 18s because you don't need to keep the diameter the same as stock. It doesn't affect the gearing and it doesn't affect the speedometer.

And as rynberg pointed out, you can fit as much brake as you'll ever need behind a 17" wheel.

While those brakes look cool, they are completely unnecessary and add a LOT of unsprung weight. I have never heard of anyone fading one of the 13" rotor upgrade kits.

Virtually all the serious Road race Supras running stock bodywork run a 17x11.5 /315-35 rear, and a 18x10/285-30 front. Not to mention MANY JGTC cars run a similar set-up. Two comments, It is not a new idea, it woks very well. So, for all you guys who usually know what you are taking about, do some research, or hush up ; Last, it is not obvious/ bad looking with CCWs which incidentally, John helped develop the idea.
