Axle seal removal

I'm trying to pull the axles on my 83 to replace the grease seal. There is so much leakage, I had to miss the last autocross. I don't know if it is stock. It was from an 83 that had been raced, and has some orange sealer slopped on the outside. The manual (and everyone I've talked to) seem to indicate it should come out fairly easily. I "rented" a slide hammer to try to get the axle out. I've been somewhat tenative with it, not knowing if there might be an internal keeper, clip or whatever. Any suggestions? Hopefully short of taking it out and apart.

There is no clip on the end of the axles, the diff can't be removed without first removing the axles. There r 3 bolts that has to be removed, the brakes shoes have to be removed to get to them. Then the axles can be pulled with the slide hammer.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I've removed the calipers, though I haven't actually removed the backing plate. It's not restricting the movement. I'm paranoid about breaking something with that hammer. Guess I just have to get braver. Thanks.
