Anyone running APG Performance Brakes on their FD? What sizing did you go with? Are you happy with them?

 

I'm interested to hear. I've found these, and whole group of other tuner-grade brake brands who've offered some solution for an ebrake on fixed rear calipers. But I can't quite get my head around using anything other than motorsports grade brakes (i.e. : Wilwood, StopTech, AP, Brembo, etc.).

 

User misterymac on instagram runs them on his FD. I've seen him give positive feedback but I also know he cooked them so much the color faded away

 

What I do know so far from talking to APG is that replacement parts are only through APG. So their rotors, hats, and calipers are all proprietary. Pads can be sourced from some other companies, but a concern I would have is if they went under, you'd be SOL for parts.

 

Yeah, and materials matter. I got some off brand StopTech replacement rotors once, and they didn't last for crap. Pad shape, and compound availability and cost are big ones too.

 

Doesn't seem like many people 1) know of APG or 2) are using their products. I like the idea of larger rear calipers with the stock e-brake. However, the fear of propriety parts bothers me a lot.

 

^Yep. I have the old RacingBrake BBK which used a special rear caliper bracket to mount the caliper further outward so you could run a larger rear rotor than the 99-spec rear rotor. It is NLA unfortunately....

I'm curious why you guys are looking at APG instead of the AP kits from Sakebomb...

 

In a word: ebrake.

Despite the proliferation of street/track cars, most brake kits are built with racing parts, and you end up with no ebrake provision. I think it's crazy that nobody has really worked this out (except for companies like APG, K-sport, etc.) which are of unknown quality. Revolution in Japan makes an ebrake kit to add on to their fixed caliper rear, using Brembo spot calipers, but it's STUPID expensive, like $3k + just for the caliper and bracket, no rotor or actual brake kit.

And FYI, I have the Racing Brake Kit, and you'll never need to replace the NLA bracket, but you can get rotor rings (and I have two sets of hats).

BUT, the factory calipers are a pain to swap pads, the pads themselves are tiny and not available in some compounds, and they need frequent rebuilds (i have a spare rebuilt set at all times).
