Another "give me your opinion on tires for my FD" thread...
Hey guys-
My Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires are nearing the end of their life. So, what's next?
I have factory 16x8 rims. Here's what I'm thinking (in 245/45/16):
- Toyo T1-S
- Toyo RA-1
- Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
- Other brilliant ideas you may have
What my driving is like: I have a more-or-less stock car that I drive 15000mi a year. A lot of that (4000mi or so) is spirited backroad driving at 40-80mph. Just about zero is track driving, 100mph+ driving, or anything else that really heats up a tire. I doubtThe remaining miles are just regular point-A-to-point-B miles. I live in the SF bay area, so it rains a lot and the temperature is in the 50s for a good part of the year during which I still like to take hard drives. I like how the Goodyears are quiet, even when old. I like their grip (although more is good :-).
Part of me realizes that I've found a good tire that matches what I need: a good, high performance street tire with few weaknesses. Part of me wants to try something new. Experimenting with RA-1 could be fun, but if I end up with a noisy ride that with only marginally better grip due to my low temperature driving and tons of heat cycling, I'll be a bit upset. The T1-S are well-known and liked, but from what I understand they become noisy and annoying with age, so half of my time spent with them would be frustrating.
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
Take care,
Shad

Out of your list, I'd go w/ the Toyo T1-S'.
There's another thread at the bottom of this page on the same subject. Don't know if you saw it or not:

Shad, I've got about 10-11k miles on my Toyo T1-S and they have been through several track events. The tread is starting to get a little low but they still have plenty of grip in our lovely rainy Bay Area weather. They were fairly quiet tires when new and really haven't gotten worse over time. The only negative thing I can think of with the Toyos is that they are skinny for their rated width. My 235 on 8.5" wheels are not wider than my 225 Dunlop SP 8000s on the stock 8" wheels. The 265s on 9.5" wheels are though...
Not that price is a large concern for me with tires, but the Toyos are cheaper than the Goodyears by quite a bit and I'm guessing they are equals (I've always found that Goodyears are overpriced for their performance in pretty much every tire model they make -- just like Michelin).
Two other alternatives you should consider are the Pirelli Pzero Nero or the Kumho MX.
