Aluminum vs steel bodied shocks

Ok, for the longest time i heard that you shouldn't use aluminum bodied shocks out on the street. I guess the reason was durability. But now, i see some manufactures like Tein say that its ok.

So whats the deal? are aluminum shock bodies less durable then steel? if so, what wears out quicker?

You would have to be an idiot or very, very brave to run aluminum-bodied monotubes on the street. A single rock bouncing off the damper would probably ruin it.

This is just another thing that people think they need, when in reality they don't. Steel-bodied dampers are cheaper and much more durable. Who gives a crap about 0.5 LB less in unsprung weight for anything other than professional racing?
