Yo,


I can get a great deal on some +42 wheels for my FC, but they would be 2mm closer in than the already tucked +40's that I have on there.

Wheelchoice sells something called a wheel spacer plate, or as the package says in Japanglish: "Adjust Prate".

Here's a pic:



This one is a 5mm plate. So I assume that it just slips between the wheel and hub and pushes the wheel out 5mm. So, the +42 goes to a +37.

Now...has anyone had experience with these wheel spacer plates? I know I will be losing 5mm of thread for the lugs to grab on per stud...is there enough of a safety margin there?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Spacers are always a semi-bandaid.

They do work, but I wouldn't add them without getting longer wheels studs to match.

 

7" wide wheel?
A 225 should still be able to fit.
If you're talking an 8" wide wheel, then you'll need some kinda spacer.

I'm running a 5mm spacer. I haven't had any problems yet up front, but I had to stop using them in back. The lug nuts would get stripped and I wouldn't be able to torque them down anymore. It was just too much stress for so little threads. I think I was getting about 5 turns.

 

So... is it safe to use wheel spacers or not? I might need spacers coz I'm getting 17X8 +40mm wheels all around... I think the rears should clear but don't know about the front with 225s.

 

Its safe to use 5mm spacers...thats THE widest you want to go with the stock studs. Check them alot at first and re-touque them.

 

Nothing wrong with 5mm spacers. You DO NEED LONGER STUDS though.

 

So I need longer studs even for 5mm spacer? Where can I buy them? Also, is the 5mm spacer smallest spacer available on market?

Do the FB's run a 12mm x 1.50 thread pitch?
If they do, they will probably fit.
Keep in mind, they come in packs of 5!

The studs are a pain in the *** to replace on ABS equiped cars.

 

Even with a 5mm spacer you'll want to try to find a hub-centric spacer, especially under race conditions. The best way to find out if you need to change the studs is to put them on and find out. Seem's the synopsis is 2-3 threads past the nut, check it out -->

IMO you can use them but some may disagree. 5mm (3/16") is small enough it would only increase the load of the studs (<--plural) about 10%, and most of the wheels anymore are not hub-centric to begin with. You may want to email them about those specific spacers though, just to make sure theres nothing screwy about them. Theres also always spacers on ebay for like 15.00 and they do the exact same thing as those 60.00 spacers.
